2026-27 AY Lecturer Pool - Asian and Asian American Studies

Cal State LA’s Asian and Asian American Studies Department in the College of Ethnic Studies invites applications for its 2026-27 academic-year part-time lecturer pool. Positions are filled each semester as instructional needs arise due to enrollment fluctuations, faculty reassignments, or other unforeseen factors. Initial appointments are typically one semester in length, though occasional academic-year appointments may be made. Renewals depend on departmental need, funding, and performance. Because needs can emerge shortly before the semester begins, candidates should be prepared to accept assignments on short notice.

Minimum Qualifications

• MA, PhD, or terminal degree in Asian American Studies, Ethnic Studies, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
• Demonstrated excellence in college-level teaching.
• Ability to relate effectively within a multiethnic, multicultural academic environment and a commitment to student-centered learning.
• Proficiency in written and oral English.
• Commitment to the university’s principles of engagement, service, and the public good.

Preferred Qualifications

• At least one semester of teaching experience in Asian American Studies or a related field at a two- or four-year college or university.
• Experience working with diverse populations and fostering inclusive, collaborative environments.
• Relevant professional work experience and training.

Responsibilities

• Deliver instruction, prepare course materials, grade assignments, and hold regular office hours.
• Additional duties as assigned by the department.
• Course assignments—including dates, times, and modality—are determined by the Department Chair under the direction of the College Dean.
• Support the academic success of all students in a diverse, multicultural setting and contribute to the university’s shared commitment to engagement, service, and the public good.

Pay

Initial salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience, generally starting at or near the minimum of the applicable range. Most new lecturers are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank. Full-time equivalent monthly salary ranges (as of 7/1/2024) are:

• Lecturer A/2: $5,507 – $6,677
• Lecturer B/3: $6,221 – $13,224
• Lecturer C/4: $6,835 – $14,523
• Lecturer D/5: $8,593 – $15,211

About the Department

The Asian and Asian American Studies Department is an interdisciplinary program that bridges Asian Studies and Asian American Studies, emphasizing the transnational connections between Asia and Asian America. The curriculum explores:

• Historical and contemporary links between Asia and Asian America, diasporas and homelands, and their mutual social, cultural, economic, and political influences.
• Cultural continuity and reconstruction as immigrant and diasporic groups form and settle in new homelands.
• Interactions and mutual influences among diverse cultural groups in multiethnic, multicultural, and multi-religious communities like the United States.

The department prepares students for careers in education, government, private enterprise, and multinational corporations, fostering success in a rapidly globalizing world.
