General Purpose

The Area Supervisor is a member of the Store Leadership team responsible for a specific, assigned area of the store and for general operations and supervision when acting as Manager on Duty. Duties include opening and closing the store, supervising associates, maintaining a friendly shopping environment, ensuring proper merchandise presentation, and keeping the work area clean.

Essential Functions

  • Maintaining Safe & Secure Environments
    • Prioritizes safety and practices safe behaviors.
    • Monitors the sales floor to create a safe shopping environment.
    • Corrects or reports unsafe conditions immediately.
    • Manages building security: entrance/exit control, EAS device checks, cash office security, armored carrier pick‑ups, and register area security.
    • Removes clutter and ensures clear egress to emergency exits.
    • Handles customer safety, accident prevention, reporting, and emergency procedures; tests fire alarm systems as scheduled and responds to after‑hours alarms when requested.
  • Customer Service
    • Treats customers, associates, and leaders with respect, courtesy, friendliness, and professionalism.
    • Recognizes associates through company recognition programs.
  • Personal and Store Brand
    • Represents and supports the company brand at all times.
    • Maintains a professional appearance in accordance with the company dress code and ensures associates do the same.
    • Keeps all store areas clean, well‑maintained, and merchandised to standard.
    • Responsible for daily trash removal.
  • General Merchandising
    • Ensures recovery, sizing, and markdowns are completed to company standards.
    • Receives merchandise trucks when needed and processes all merchandise with urgency.
    • Handles inbound non‑merchandise deliveries (signs, supplies, special deliveries).
    • Maintains cleanliness and organization of all stockrooms.
    • Assists in delivering and placing merchandise on the sales floor.
    • Secures and processes back‑stock according to policy.
    • Merchandises assigned department, including back‑stock, and reduces loss due to damage.
    • Ensures compliance with monthly presentation guidelines.
    • Manages floor moves, promotional signing, and re‑wraps as needed.
  • Loss Prevention
    • Follows the Loss Prevention Awareness Program.
    • Maintains a strong customer service presence on the sales floor.
    • Engages customers and associates to heighten loss‑prevention awareness.
    • Safeguards confidential information, cash, credit‑card data, and merchandise.
    • Maintains the Public View Monitor (PVM) system and conducts “Code 50” package inspections.
    • Executes company best practices to maximize productivity while minimizing steps and touches.
  • Front End Supervision and Operations
    • Ensures associates follow company standards at the front end.
    • Maintains pace, energy, and presence to manage lines and expedite customer wait times.
    • Trains and coaches associates on cash registers, shortage control, and other front‑end procedures.
    • Controls associate break schedules for backups, lunches, and breaks.
    • Ensures all front‑end equipment is working properly and maintains proper supplies and recovery.
    • Expedites go‑backs, ensuring they are scanned, security‑tagged, and ticketed.
    • Teaches the “Scan and Bag” best practice.
    • Ensures salability of merchandise on the front end, aisle tables, 4‑way features, and specialty racks.
  • Fitting Rooms
    • Maintains cleanliness of fitting rooms.
    • Audits and accounts for fitting‑room garment tags per policy.
    • Ensures go‑back compliance; all merchandise returned to the sales floor is ticketed, scanned, nubbed, and security‑tagged as needed.
  • Administrative Duties (as assigned by Store Manager)
    • Ensures cash pulls and bank deposits follow company policy.
    • Manages front‑end control when needed.
    • Adheres to policies for refund approval, associate purchase approval, till security, register paid outs/ins, void approval, register media, and break schedules.
    • Handles payroll administration: daily punch edits, associate scheduling compliance, Sunday payroll transmission, and payroll reporting.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Special Skills

  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Fluency in English
  • Prior customer service and supervisory experience preferred
  • Familiarity with point‑of‑sale equipment and applications
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations commonly used in retail
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends

Physical Requirements

  • Use all store equipment, including PDTs, registers, and PCs.
  • Stand, walk, and move around the store up to 100 % of the workday.
  • Regularly bend at the waist, squat, kneel, climb, carry, reach, and stoop.
  • Occasionally push, pull, and lift more than 25 lb.
  • Use janitorial equipment, rolling racks, ladders, and other assigned supplies.
  • Stockroom associates must regularly push, pull, and lift more than 20 lb.
