About the role

The Area Manager supervises associates and manages the day-to-day operations of an assigned area within a distribution center, achieving operational, financial, and service results through directing and supporting associates who perform various distribution center functions.

Responsibilities

  • Select, orient, train, coach, counsel, and discipline associates.
  • Educate and develop associates to increase their capabilities, job performance, and adherence to company, federal, state, and local policies and procedures.
  • Ensure associates attend all scheduled training/cross-training and maintain 100% compliance with equipment operator and cross-training goals.
  • Schedule departmental trainers for new hire orientation and on-the-job training.
  • Communicate values, strategies, objectives, and assign accountabilities.
  • Maintain positive and productive continuity with each associate and their work teams.
  • Initiate and foster cooperation within and between departments.
  • Create a climate of openness, trust, and respect for all associates.
  • Plan, monitor, appraise, and manage performance results.
  • Enforce systems, policies, procedures, and productivity standards; administer corrective actions for violations and ensure temporary associates are similarly held accountable.
  • Investigate equipment incidents, document incident reports, schedule situational management meetings, and implement countermeasures and corrective actions.
  • Maintain accurate records of staff attendance, vacation, personal time off, sickness, and other attendance standards.
  • Manage operations to meet financial targets and assigned service levels.
  • Identify and explain budget and service level variances; propose corrective actions.
  • Evaluate and recommend process changes to improve efficiencies and safety.
  • Establish daily and weekly priorities and production plans.
  • Schedule associates, assign work, and monitor/revise schedules as needed.
  • Research, compile, initiate, sort, and analyze production performance records and data.
  • Resolve and report production issues.
  • Ensure the work environment is clean and safe; report and respond to unsafe conditions or violations.
  • Ensure associates have the proper tools to perform their duties.
  • Ensure equipment is maintained, identify needed repairs, and ensure timely repairs.
  • Ensure associates are properly trained and certified to operate equipment.
  • Evaluate new equipment and techniques for process improvements.
  • Initiate, lead, and participate in special projects.
  • Demonstrate openness to new ideas and ways to achieve results.
  • Develop managerial and leadership competencies through company-sponsored education, workshops, and leadership development training.
  • Review professional publications, establish personal networks, and participate in professional organizations.
  • Regular attendance is an essential function of the job.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by manager.

Supervisory Responsibility

Directly supervises non-exempt employees.
