About the role
A Manufacturing Area Manager leads operations across three production shifts, managing salaried group leaders, shift leaders, and cross-functional maintenance and engineering teams. The role focuses on Safety, People, Quality, Responsiveness, Cost, and Environment (SPQRCE) and involves solving complex manufacturing problems while fostering teamwork, engagement, and inclusion.
Responsibilities
- Coach, train, develop, and evaluate employees.
- Lead and assist in analyzing and solving complex manufacturing problems.
- Foster a strong safety culture with a goal of zero injuries and an engaged workforce.
- Meet cost, schedule, and quality requirements.
- Maintain corporate and unit management control systems, budgets, and performance monitoring tools.
- Uphold safety and housekeeping standards.
- Comply with local and national labor agreements.
- Lead forecasting and establish action plans to accomplish job or project completion.
- Collaborate with internal and external teams.
- Administer divisional and corporate policies.
- Ensure effective use of personnel, material, and equipment.
- Lead the selection, training, and development of new employees.
- Manage multiple complex projects with autonomy and accountability.
- Demonstrate initiative to improve output and support others.
- Create budgets and forecasts for the assigned area.
- Lead and implement General Motors Manufacturing System (GMS) principles.
- Support upcoming product launches through coordination and timely execution.
- Assist in the overall direction and coordination of manufacturing activities.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, or a related field OR equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of production manufacturing leadership experience.
- Willingness to work across three production shifts as needed.
- Experience managing cross-functional teams.
Qualifications
- Track record of coaching and developing teams.
- Strong skills in motivation, conflict resolution, and building a high-performance culture.
- Ability to negotiate, resolve conflicts, and align cross-functional goals.
- Proven ability to translate data into actionable insights to improve performance.
- Track record of driving cost savings through process optimization.
- Ability to track and drive metrics such as equipment uptime, OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness), scrap rates, and productivity.
- Strong record in maintaining or improving workplace safety standards.
- Experience being part of a launch team.
- Experience in the automotive industry.
- Experience working in a union environment.
Pay
The expected base compensation for this role is $139,900.00 - $214,400.00. Actual base compensation within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position. An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
