Area Engineer - Littlefield
About the role
The Area Engineer will lead a team delivering construction, maintenance, design, right-of-way, utility coordination, and project development across a five-county area. This role will work directly with local governments, contractors, district staff, and the public to solve challenges, strengthen partnerships, and deliver projects that matter to the communities we serve.
Responsibilities
- Oversight of construction operations in the area office, including review of shop drawings, compliance with regulations, approval of letting advertising, and conducting pre-construction meetings and public hearings.
- Overseeing Design Section operations in the area office.
- Overseeing inspection of construction projects and temporary traffic control.
- Overseeing maintenance sections, including planning and budgeting work with maintenance supervisors and district staff, right-of-way plan preparation, and monitors acquisition processes to coordinate project letting, utility relocation/adjustment inspection, and responsible for material testing and construction engineering.
- Approving and inspecting driveway, utility, and drainage fill permits, and monitors removal of illegal signs.
- Directs and plans project development and/or provides estimates.
- Directs the development of work programs to meet transportation needs within the assigned geographical area.
- Oversees, coordinates, and monitors contractors' compliance with plans and specifications; authorizes payment of estimates; resolves differences, disputes, and claims; plans preparation and approval of expenditures.
- Provides direction for construction projects and/or contract change negotiations.
- Represents the Department to the public; answers inquiries from governmental officials, makes media presentations, speaks at public functions, and participates in other civic endeavors.
- Reviews all plans prepared by the area office before transmitting to district headquarters; provides technical expertise.
Requirements
Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS. Experience: 5 years transportation engineering. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications Must have 1 year supervisory/managerial experience. Project leader or lead worker experience may substitute for supervisory/managerial experience.
Qualifications
- Licensed Prof Engineer*Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.
