About the role

The Area Coordinator (AC) is a full-time, master’s-level professional staff member who assists in the development and administration of a residential program housing approximately 3,000+ students. Compensation includes a competitive salary, state benefits, a furnished on-campus apartment, and access to professional development opportunities. The AC is primarily responsible for fostering student development and leadership in their assigned area, reporting to the Associate Director. The position requires a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. This is typically a 3-year, entry-level position contingent upon annual contract renewal.

Responsibilities

Facility Management

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of a residential community of approximately 900-1000 students.
  • Develop a safe, secure, and comfortable environment conducive to academic excellence and student development.
  • Conduct frequent building walkthroughs and make recommendations on facility issues.
  • Maintain open communication with hall support staff (Housekeeping, Facilities, etc.).
  • Assist in emergency situations as needed.

Supervision

  • Directly supervise, train, and evaluate Graduate Hall Coordinators, Head Resident Advisors, Resident Advisors, and Desk Attendants.
  • Coordinate weekly staff meetings and biweekly 1:1 meetings with student staff members.
  • Provide formal and informal feedback on performance.
  • Offer professional development opportunities for RA staff and student leaders.
  • Monitor and maintain in-hall duty schedules.

Community Development

  • Oversee and monitor the implementation of the Departmental programming model for respective buildings.
  • Develop academic and holistic programs fostering a positive community focused on personal growth and appreciation for others.
  • Guide the development of programming, bulletin boards, and other community-building practices.
  • Assess and evaluate programmatic outcomes.
  • Attend building and area-wide programs.
  • Maintain high visibility among staff and residents through office hours that meet student and administrative needs.
  • Provide proactive educational interventions to minimize behavioral issues.
  • Develop positive social traditions for students in the assigned area.
  • Educate students on policies, procedures, and individual responsibilities of living in a community.
  • Create weekend programmatic initiatives aligned with the department and University’s strategic plan.
  • Clearly communicate and enforce departmental and university policies to staff and students.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent plus 2-4 years of related experience.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail, meet deadlines, and prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to remain calm during difficult situations, maintain confidentiality, and exhibit professionalism.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal and organizational skills, and public speaking ability.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Qualtrics, PowerPoint, Google E-Mail, Google Docs, THD, and Banner.
  • Sound knowledge of student development theory and best practices in student affairs and higher education.
  • Perform duties with or without accommodation.

Qualifications

  • Preferred: Master’s Degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Counseling, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 1 year post-master’s live-in residence life experience.
  • Experience supervising student staff, recruiting and selecting student staff members, and advising student organizations.
  • Experience serving in an on-call duty rotation and with crisis and emergency management.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office and RMS-Mercury/StarRez.
  • Strong problem-solving, management, and supervisory skills.

Schedule

Fully on-site, 40 hours per week, 12 months. Flexible schedule required, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
