Director of Buildings and Facilities
The Director of Buildings and Facilities is responsible for the safety, operations, security, maintenance, and ongoing capital improvements for all the Museum’s campus within the South Street Seaport Historic District.
- Daily operations, maintenance, and security for Museum functions within the Schermerhorn Row Block on Fulton/John Street and the “Museum Block” on Water Street, the Titanic Memorial Lighthouse, as well as Pier 16 on the East River.

Relief Captain
The Relief Captain works under the direction of the full-time Captain. Captains are responsible for the safety of the vessel, guests, and crew while in command.
- Run harbor tours and charters, providing guests with an experience consistent with the goals of the program and the Museum.
- Effectively manage, lead, and mentor crew to help meet the vessel’s operational needs and the Museum’s mission.

Relief Mate
The Mate assists, at the direction of the Captain, in all aspects of the operation, handling, and maintenance of Pioneer and W.O. Decker. They serve as a teacher and leader of the crew.
- Create and maintain an atmosphere of inclusivity, healthy development, and free of harassment.
- Maintain clear communication with the Captain and Fleet Mate.
- Serve as liaison with visitors and the public.

Relief Deckhand
The Deckhand assists in day-to-day sail operations, including education, public, and charter sails on evenings and weekends. Willingness to work with volunteer crew, students, and the public is critical.
- Experience in tall ships and/or Experiential Education is desired.
- Continuous on-the-job training will be offered, but with multiple sails per week, some sailing experience is critical.
Internships
The Museum’s Internship Program offers college undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates valuable insights into the operations of a professional museum environment.
- Seaport Museum interns are usually placed in Collections, Archives, and Exhibitions departments where they work with professional staff, assist on internal and external projects.
- In addition to their departmental work, interns take part in conversations on museology, and visit other New York City institutions gaining opportunity to develop connections with other museum professionals.

Due to the anticipated high volume of applications, only candidates chosen for interviews will receive direct communication regarding the status of their application.
- Time Commitment and Pay: Interns must commit to 20 hours per week and are required to be on-site at least two full days per week, 9:30am–4:30pm Tuesdays through Fridays. Interns are paid $18/hour on a bi-weekly basis and receive free admission to most New York City museums and employee discounts at the Seaport Museum’s Bowne & Co. Stationers.
