Position Overview

Assists with monitoring and maintaining plant operations and assists in the repair of the power plant and fabrication of special projects. Participates and successfully completes the city-sponsored apprenticeship program. Works nights and weekends.

Qualifications And Requirements

  • Experience, Education, and Training: Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. 1 to 3 years' experience in power plant operations

  • Requirements: Must be 21 years or older (to be able to get Haz-Mat endorsement of CDL)

  • Knowledge of machinery and ability to make repairs. Fabrication experience preferred.

  • May be required to work weekends or a variety of shifts (primarily evenings and nights).

  • Subject to emergency call-in.

  • Must pass pre-employment drug testing and submit to periodic drug testing as required by applicable laws.

  • Must have a valid Class B Drivers' License. Or Ability to obtain CDL (Class B with Hazmat endorsement) within 6 months of employment.

Essential Functions

  • Takes plant readings on engines and fuel and places them correctly on logs, ensuring accuracy of readings and thoroughness.

  • Answers phones and logs all trouble calls. Dispatches service personnel as required.

  • Maintains computer readings for the status of water towers, reservoirs, deep wells, and booster pumps for water placement throughout the City.

  • Maintains status of major electrical breakers, voltage readings, and breaker panels, taking appropriate action when variances occur.

  • Maintains engine control panels and records readings, ensuring accuracy.

  • Produces power and/or implements testing procedures through start-up of jet turbine engines, ensuring proper operation and safety.

  • Makes determinations in the absence of a supervisor to increase or schedule power following established procedures, ensuring compliance and accuracy.

  • Performs preventative and overhaul maintenance on all engines, jet and auxiliaries, assuring efficiency, thoroughness, and safety.

  • Responds to requests from other City departments, ensuring cooperation and timeliness.

  • As appropriate, designs and completes fabrication projects for City departments as requested, assuring that the production meets expectations following safety procedures and departmental procedures.

  • Delivers fuel to other departments as requested.

  • Dispatches City personnel after hours to handle emergency service calls, ensuring proper notification and good public relations.

  • Completes appropriate documentation for completed activities as requested, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.

  • All other duties as assigned. Employees may be assigned other tasks as needed.
