This role provides high-quality, patient-centered care as a member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team. Working collaboratively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, the Advanced Practice Professional (APP) assesses, diagnoses, treats, and manages patients within their scope of practice and area of specialty. The APP delivers evidence-based care, promotes positive patient outcomes, maintains professional and regulatory standards, and supports the clinical, educational, and operational goals of the department and organization.

About the Role

The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) coordinates and manages comprehensive care for emergency medicine patients, including biological, social, and psychological assessments. The APP collaborates with medical and surgical specialty teams to develop and review patient care plans, performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and coordinates discharge planning and follow-up. The role also involves educating residents and medical/nursing students and ensuring healthcare services comply with state laws and professional licensing requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Manages comprehensive and individualized care for emergency medicine patients and their families in the emergency department (DEM) and post-discharge ambulatory settings.
  • Coordinates hospitalization, completes pre-procedure evaluations, and performs integrated assessments.
  • Orders additional tests or consults in collaboration with emergency medicine faculty or following established clinical guidelines.
  • Performs and communicates results of diagnostic tests within established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
  • Consults and communicates with DEM clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal findings.
  • Performs succinct, comprehensive clinical evaluations and documents findings in medical records.
  • Facilitates patient discharge by coordinating appropriate services and tests for outpatient follow-up.
  • Develops individualized care plans, including teaching, discharge planning, and referrals to other healthcare team members or admission as necessary.
  • Demonstrates expertise in caring for patients across the age continuum.
  • Identifies unstable or complex patient care situations and facilitates appropriate intervention in the DEM setting.
  • Recognizes emergency situations and initiates effective emergency care.
  • Evaluates patients and coordinates follow-up procedures and tests in ambulatory or inpatient settings.
  • Assists in collecting outcome measures.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision-making.
  • Utilizes equipment safely and bases decisions on relevant scientific principles and established standards of care.
  • Provides education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using appropriate teaching strategies.
  • Updates own knowledge base and completes clinical competencies.
  • Serves as a resource for staff caring for emergency medicine patients.
  • Provides educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel.
  • Participates in community programs and literature distribution in area of expertise.
  • Documents care plans, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in medical records.
  • Collaborates with leaders and staff to achieve patient outcome-based improvements in care.
  • Provides leadership in developing and implementing changes in emergency medicine practice to positively impact patient outcomes.
  • Works collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to facilitate creative problem-solving and professional support.
  • Participates in and initiates interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education.
  • Serves as a professional role model and promotes innovation in care delivery.
  • Participates in and provides leadership for committees and task forces.
  • Documents hours and submits billing reports as appropriate.
  • Reviews and interprets emergency medicine data from sources such as patient registries and clinical/financial reports, recommending changes as necessary.
  • Participates in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
  • Assists faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
  • Performs other duties or projects as assigned.

Requirements

For Nurse Practitioner

  • Graduate of a CCNE-accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing.
  • National Certification by a recognized APRN Certification Center.
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
  • American Heart Association BLS, ACLS, and ATLS certifications.
  • Acute care or emergency medicine experience preferred; eligible new graduates will be considered.

For Physician Assistant

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant.
  • Graduate of an ARC-PA-approved Physician Assistant (PA) training program.
  • Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure by the WV Board of Medicine or WV Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
  • American Heart Association BLS, ACLS, and ATLS certifications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ACNP or FNP certification (for Nurse Practitioners).
  • Master’s level education (for Physician Assistants).
  • American Heart Association PALS certification encouraged.

Skills

  • Proficiency with computers.
  • Strong communication skills.

Physical Requirements

The role requires strength and stamina for lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, positioning patients, standing, walking, and carrying materials/equipment weighing 40+ pounds.

Working Environment

  • Working closely with others.
  • Protracted or irregular hours.
  • Exposure to biohazards and infectious diseases.
  • Working with or near the deceased.
  • Working with hands in water.
  • Electrical hazards associated with patient care equipment.

Schedule

Scheduled weekly hours: 36. Exempt position.
