About the Role
Responsible for the management of reporting Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) and APP supervisors, including all activities related to direct and facilitated patient care, service line development, quality improvement goals, strategic planning, and protocol or policy enforcement. This includes ensuring APP clinical work product is at the top of scope or adheres to the Hospital Playbook. Assesses staffing plan effectiveness, including experience, skill mix, and development of responsive staffing systems. Mentors and coaches APPs, completing administrative duties such as hiring, onboarding, orientation, performance evaluations, OPPE/FPPE, and more. Represents APPs to outside review services such as The Joint Commission and the American College of Surgeons.
This position is typically 50% administrative and 50% clinical in the area of expertise or as determined by the APP Director or VP of APP Services. Responsibilities include leadership for APPs within identified specialty service(s), with potential expansion to other APP teams based on organizational needs. This is a 40-hour position and may include off shifts, weekends, and holidays as required by the service.
Responsibilities
- Collaborates with regional and service line leadership to identify strategic clinical growth and process improvement. Participates in regional, service line, and leadership meetings/committees as requested.
- Evaluates APP workforce and duties compared to clinical need; approves and forwards requests for additional APP staffing to the APP Director and Service Line VP.
- Works actively with the APP Director on issues of APP recruitment, retention, and recognition.
- Ensures financial integrity and planning for the area of responsibility by reviewing billing practices and monitoring metrics such as reimbursement, productivity, and utilization.
- Acts as central oversight for Continuing Education (CE) and Continuing Medical Education (CME) policy, including review and approval of related expenses.
- Assists with the development of clinically relevant peer review and quality metrics; may assist with individual chart reviews for ongoing professional evaluation.
- Advises on the development of Focused Professional Practice Evaluation (FPPE) in collaboration with local physician leadership.
- Manages change within the service line, ensuring bidirectional communication between APP Director, service line leaders, APP Supervisors, and APPs.
- Oversees APP student education placement and the development of clinical training, including orientation process development, service line education, and billing/coding.
- Manages the performance of all APPs in the area of responsibility by conducting formal performance evaluations, providing coaching and mentoring, developing improvement plans, and coordinating disciplinary processes as needed. Includes gathering feedback from interdisciplinary teams.
- Provides general oversight of scheduling and works closely with APP Supervisors on unexpected changes or replacements.
- Works clinically 50% of the time in the area of clinical expertise, or as determined by the APP Director.
Supervision
The APP Manager will have dual reporting to the relevant service line APP Director and the designated physician leader for administrative purposes. When on clinical duty, the APP Manager will collaborate with the assigned physician.
Administrative supervision is exercised over APPs within the assigned areas.
Requirements
Physician Assistant Candidate
- Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
- Satisfactory completion of a physician assistant program accredited by ARC-PA or one of its predecessor agencies.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
- State of Michigan Controlled Substance License required.
- Current DEA registration required.
- BLS required (ACLS may be required depending on delineation of additional privileges).
- Five years of APP clinical experience in a specialty relevant to the practice area.
- Two years of relevant leadership experience.
Nurse Practitioner Candidate
- Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.
- Graduate of an accredited nurse practitioner program.
- Current DEA registration required.
- BLS required (ACLS may be required depending on delineation of additional privileges).
- Five years of APP clinical experience in a specialty relevant to the practice area.
- Two years of relevant leadership experience.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience in the clinical area within the area of oversight.
- In-depth knowledge of Advanced Practice work, state and federal regulations, and credentialing.
- Considerable knowledge of departmental policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to assess, interpret, and analyze clinical information independently and collaboratively.
- Strong knowledge of management and leadership principles and practices.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to perform as a role model to the APP team.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaborate effectively in a team environment and matrixed organization.
- Able to collaborate in a manner that fosters teambuilding and provides visionary direction for team members.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with administrators, physicians, peers, and all members of the healthcare team.
- Demonstrated ability to initiate and lead a change management process using continuous improvement frameworks.
- Experience in regional leadership overseeing teams across multiple sites, ensuring alignment of operations, staffing, and strategic initiatives while maintaining high-quality patient care and team engagement.

Schedule
- Full-time, 40 hours per week.
- Variable shift (may include off shifts, weekends, and holidays as required by the service).
- Day shift with days worked Monday through Friday.
- Variable weekends.
Location
Primary location: Royal Oak Hospital - 3601 W 13 Mile Rd, Royal Oak, with responsibilities at Troy and Farmington Hills sites.
