API Technical Writer

This is an onsite contract role based in Greensboro, NC, anticipated to last 6 months with strong potential for extension. The schedule is first-shift Monday–Friday.

Responsibilities

  • Own and drive the API documentation roadmap, proactively identifying documentation gaps, outdated content, inconsistencies, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Build, prioritize, and manage a backlog of documentation enhancements across multiple API portfolios.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive API documentation, including endpoint references, parameters, request/response examples, authentication guidance, error handling, and sample code.
  • Develop user-focused technical content such as tutorials, onboarding guides, FAQs, troubleshooting documentation, release notes, and implementation best practices.
  • Produce adoption-focused content that explains business processes, use cases, and value propositions supported by APIs and integrations.
  • Gather requirements and technical knowledge by interviewing developers, service owners, architects, solution experts, and business stakeholders.
  • Translate complex technical concepts into clear, concise, and audience-appropriate documentation for both technical and non-technical users.
  • Develop supporting learning materials including instructional guides, eLearning content, video scripts, and technical walkthroughs.
  • Create or coordinate diagrams, process flows, architecture visuals, and other supporting documentation artifacts.
  • Partner with product, engineering, and business teams to verify technical accuracy and ensure documentation remains current.
  • Collaborate with marketing and communications teams to develop technically accurate solution briefs, customer-facing content, and sales enablement materials.
  • Drive documentation updates from concept through publication while maintaining quality, consistency, and usability standards.

Experience

  • Proven experience as an API Technical Writer supporting software products, developer platforms, APIs, or integration services.
  • Strong command of formal technical English with exceptional writing, editing, and documentation skills.
  • Experience creating API reference documentation, developer guides, onboarding materials, and technical tutorials.
  • Ability to understand RESTful APIs, authentication methods, integrations, workflows, and software architecture concepts.
  • Experience working directly with developers, engineers, solution architects, and technical subject matter experts.
  • Strong interviewing, information-gathering, and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Experience managing documentation backlogs, content roadmaps, and documentation lifecycle processes.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and independently execute multiple documentation initiatives simultaneously.
  • Strong attention to detail with a focus on accuracy, consistency, and usability.
  • Experience creating or working with technical diagrams, process flows, or architecture documentation.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with developer portals, API management platforms, or integration ecosystems.
  • Exposure to software development methodologies and technical product development lifecycles.
  • Experience writing customer-facing adoption materials, solution briefs, or technical marketing content.
  • Familiarity with eLearning development, instructional design, or multimedia documentation formats.
  • Experience working with documentation management systems, content management systems, or collaborative knowledge platforms.
