Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provide direct supervision of ACO field operations, recommend policy, plan and direct activities of employees to maximize effectiveness and efficiency of operations utilizing all available resources
  • Aid in the selection, hiring and training of Animal Control Officers
  • Plan, direct, control and evaluate job performance of several employees and perform annual employee performance reviews
  • Administer corrective training, counseling and/or discipline when appropriate
  • Train ACOs in all field operations procedures and ensure staff maintain state-required certifications
  • Resolve problems and miscommunications between employees in a fair and unbiased manner
  • Support as a certified ACO for field operations, including the impound of animals and livestock
  • Respond to citizen complaints and inquiries
  • Perform duties related to after-hours call-out rotation
  • Prepare charging documents for and testify in criminal court
  • Coordinate with various groups, organizations, and governmental agencies
  • Communicate with the Shelter Manager and the Police Department chain of command regarding field activities
  • Compile data and submit monthly reports and summaries to department supervisors
  • Recommend ordinances, programs, and proposals to improve animal services field operations
  • Brief the Shelter Manager on budget matters and recommend budget considerations
  • Ensure employee compliance with established safety procedures
  • Maintain compliance with health and safety laws and guidelines
  • Assist with shelter operations, including cleaning, care, feeding, euthanasia, adoptions, and surrenders when necessary
  • Order and maintain supplies, working closely with local vendors and the city Purchasing department
  • Accept and collect payments for services or fees
  • Provide community education regarding animal services and safety

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Three (3) years of experience in an animal shelter facility or related field
  • Two (2) years of experience in a lead or supervisory role
  • Certified Animal Control Officer
  • Advanced Animal Control Certification or ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment
  • Administrative Animal Control Certification or ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment
  • Certified Euthanasia Technician or ability to obtain within 120 days of employment
