About the role

The Anesthetic Recovery Technician or Assistant works closely with numerous departments within the hospital including Surgery and Anesthesia, Internal Medicine, Dermatology, Radiology, General Medicine, Urgent Care and ECC teams. The primary responsibility is to provide the highest quality post anesthetic monitoring care to the patients of Angell Animal Medical Center-West. The Anesthesia Recovery Technician/Assistant must work in conjunction with multiple teams of doctors and technicians to provide support and direction for the interns and residents.

Responsibilities

  • Recover patients from anesthetic procedures for multiple departments on any given day; patients remain in the anesthetic recovery technician/assistant's care for the remainder of their hospitalization, including any other treatments or care needed during the shift
  • Maintain knowledge of possible post anesthetic complications and relay information clearly to the overseeing doctor team
  • Demonstrate and model strong technical skills including but not limited to: interpreting and carrying out treatment orders provided by the overseeing doctor, venipuncture, IV catheter placement, emergent intubation, CPR procedures, along with central line, arterial line, chest tube and tracheostomy maintenance
  • Provide guidance and support to all staff members in the areas of patient care and unit operations
  • Transport animals safely adhering to hospital policies and procedures as needed

Physical requirements

  • Mandatory regular attendance and punctual presence
  • Able to stand for long periods of time, up to 80%-100% of entire shift
  • Able to squat, kneel and get up from the floor without assistance on a regular basis
  • Able to ergonomically and independently lift and move patients weighing up to 40 lbs; over 40 lbs with assistance
  • Able to perform some repetitive movement of upper/lower body while lifting/restraining/transporting patients

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of veterinary surgery or emergency experience required
  • Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) required in order to be hired with the title technician
  • Associate's degree or better in Veterinary Technology or related field
  • Previous animal handling experience

Skills

  • Computer: proficient use of electronic medical record system, Microsoft Outlook and Office, as well as any other software operations used in the operation of the department
  • Communication: ability to express oneself clearly, verbally and in writing, in a non-judgmental and cooperative manner
  • Medical Terminology & Abbreviations: advanced working knowledge

Pay

  • Veterinary Assistants: $22-$27/hour
  • Certified Veterinary Technicians: $25-$30/hour, with $5,000 Sign on Bonus for CVTs
  • Candidates with additional experience or credentials may be eligible for compensation aligned with their qualifications

Schedule

Full time 40 hours per week; 9:30am-8pm Monday-Thursday, rotating holidays required.
