Anatomic Pathology Team Lead

About the role

As the Anatomic Pathology Team Lead, you’ll play a key role in supporting exceptional patient care by overseeing daily surgical pathology operations, ensuring accurate specimen processing, and maintaining compliance with regulatory standards. This working-lead position offers the opportunity to blend hands-on technical expertise with leadership responsibilities, partnering closely with pathologists, staff, and cross-functional teams to keep workflows running smoothly. In this role, you’ll help shape quality, efficiency, and team development within a critical diagnostic area. From troubleshooting complex technical issues to guiding staff, monitoring turnaround times, and supporting continuous improvement, you’ll contribute to the high standards TriHealth is known for across the region.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and prioritize daily workflow within the surgical pathology department (grossing, cytology procedures, frozen microtomy, etc.)
• Ensure timely and accurate specimen handling from accessioning through slide delivery
• Monitor turnaround times and proactively address workflow bottlenecks
• Assist with staffing assignments and coverage to meet workload demands
• Assist with inventory ordering, storage and management
• Perform gross examination of specimens (based on qualifications and scope)
• Troubleshoot technical issues related to grossing, cytology procedures, staining and frozen microtomy
• Ensure proper specimen orientation, fixation, and processing protocols are followed
• Serve as a subject matter expert for complex or problematic cases
• Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditations standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission)
• Monitor quality control and quality assurance metrics
• Participate in audits, inspections, and proficiency testing
• Identify opportunities for process improvement and implement corrective actions
• Provide day-to-day guidance, support, and accountability for team members
• Train and onboard new staff; ensure competency assessments are completed
• Address performance concerns in collaboration with leadership
• Foster a positive, collaborative, and professional work environment
• Act as the primary point of contact for surgical pathology staff during the shift
• Communicate effectively with pathologists regarding specimen prioritization and issues
• Act as liaison between staff and leadership
• Partner with other departments (e.g., Histology, Cytology) to ensure continuity of workflow
• Escalate concerns appropriately to management

Requirements

• Associate's Degree in Biological Science or related field (Required)
• 4–5 years Surgical Pathology Lab (Preferred)
• 1–2 years Progressive leadership (Preferred)

Schedule

Full-Time (80 hours bi-weekly). Day Shift. No weekend, holiday, or on-call commitment.
