Ambulatory Nursing Supervisor, OBGYN - Full-Time, Days
About the Role
Join UChicago Medicine as an Ambulatory Nursing Supervisor with our OBGYN team in DCAM - Hyde Park. This 100% onsite position requires you to be based in the greater Chicagoland area. The University of Chicago Medicine provides a broad range of general and specialized obstetrics and gynecology services, including preventive gynecologic exams, prenatal care, minimally invasive surgery, and high-risk pregnancy care.
This role offers unified nursing leadership across Comer Children's Hospital and the Cottage Grove Avenue Clinic, overseeing clinical operations in pediatric and adult specialty practices.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct supervisory oversight of nursing and clinical staff across Comer Children's Hospital and the Cottage Grove Avenue Clinic.
- Manage Human Resources activities for direct reports, including hiring, scheduling, performance appraisals, competency validation, and ongoing performance management.
- Apply consistent standards of clinical practice and conduct across all specialty practices at both sites.
- Provide administrative management coverage in the absence of Practice Administrators.
- Monitor and coordinate patient flow across all specialty clinics at both sites.
- Ensure clinical staff appropriately assess patients, perform triage, and document findings accurately and timely in Epic.
- Address workflow or documentation variations to maintain consistency and quality.
- Confer with physicians and advanced practice providers regarding patient care and treatment.
- Evaluate patient acuity daily and intervene to ensure patient safety and appropriate clinical response.
- Work closely with Ambulatory Medical Directors and Practice Administrators to oversee quality and safety initiatives.
- Evaluate new procedures, programs, or treatment protocols for regulatory, compliance, staffing, and equipment needs.
- Participate in UCMC Practice Councils and represent Ambulatory Nursing at multi-site and system-level quality forums.
- Address patient and provider satisfaction concerns, investigate patient concerns, and implement service recovery protocols.
- Review patient educational materials to ensure adherence to UCMC professional and quality standards.
- Establish, coordinate, and maintain comprehensive training and orientation programs for new clinical personnel, including Medical Assistants, LPNs, and RNs.
- Coordinate onboarding activities across 16+ specialty practice areas, focusing on specialty-specific clinical protocols and scope of practice.
- Coordinate activities with Research Nurses as applicable.
- Ensure all clinical staff complete mandatory educational programs and in-service requirements per The Joint Commission (TJC/JCAHO) regulations.
- Monitor compliance and achieve 100% completion of annual competencies.
- Administer and document competency testing across all specialty disciplines.
- Ensure effective communication between non-clinical and clinical practice staff to facilitate timely patient rooming, prompt addressing of clinical questions, and efficient referrals.
- Serve as an operational liaison between Comer and Cottage Grove site teams.
- Conduct rounds across all specialty practice areas to inspect the environment of care for cleanliness, equipment maintenance, supply inventory, and infection control standards.
- Monitor telephone pools for medication refills and symptom management, set callback turnaround time standards, and ensure compliance through Epic pools and messaging.
- Perform other duties as requested by senior management.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
- Five or more years of nursing experience, with a minimum of two years in a supervisory or leadership capacity in an ambulatory, multi-specialty, or academic medical center setting.
- Current Illinois Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master of Science in Nursing, MBA, or MHA.
- Experience leading teams across multiple sites or departments.
- Familiarity with pediatric and adult patient populations.
- Nursing leadership or ambulatory care certification (e.g., Ambulatory Care Nursing – RN-BC).
Schedule
- Full Time (1.0 FTE).
- Shift: Days - 9:30 am to 6:00 pm.
- Work Location: Onsite - DCAM - Hyde Park.
