About the role

The Staff Nurse in the Division of Colorectal Surgery provides high-quality, patient-centered nursing care to adult surgical patients, including those undergoing colorectal surgical procedures, within the ambulatory setting. This role supports patient care through clinical telephone triage, care coordination, patient education, and collaboration with Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) and the interdisciplinary care team to ensure safe, timely, and effective care.

The Staff Nurse systematically collects and assesses data related to patient health status to develop, execute, and evaluate the plan of care. They provide assessments, administer treatments, and communicate with the multidisciplinary care team while ensuring care is safe, holistic, efficient, and culturally sensitive.

Responsibilities

• Provide clinical telephone triage and nursing support for Division of Colorectal Surgery patients, including medical and pre/post-operative surgical patients.
• Support pre-operative and post-operative colorectal surgery patients through ambulatory symptom assessment, care coordination, and patient education.
• Perform clinical assessment of patient symptoms, determine urgency, and facilitate appropriate disposition and follow-up.
• Provide post-operative wound assessment and care with support from APPs as needed.
• Attend monthly Division staff meetings and other requested meetings.
• Identify and escalate urgent or complex clinical concerns to the appropriate Advanced Practice Provider.
• Problem-solve and function as a resource to the multidisciplinary care team, resolving complex issues on behalf of providers and patients.
• Coordinate care across the Colorectal Surgery practice to ensure continuity, timely follow-up, and effective communication with patients, families, and referring providers.
• Provide patient education related to colorectal surgery conditions, surgical preparation and recovery, medication management, diagnostic testing, and follow-up care.
• Accurately document nursing assessments, interventions, and plans of care in the electronic medical record (Epic), using SBAR format when appropriate.
• Maintain and update clinical knowledge and skills based on current evidence-based practices.
• Participate in departmental quality improvement and quality management initiatives.
• Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and support staff to support efficient clinic operations and high-quality patient care.
• Manage the clinic pager to facilitate effective and efficient triaging of patient requests and ensure proper care delivery.
• Provide clinical support and coverage as needed in the absence of APP colleagues.
• Perform other duties as assigned by Colorectal Surgical leadership in support of patient care and clinic operations.

Requirements

• Graduate of an approved school of nursing with current registration in Massachusetts.
• Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing is required for newly licensed nurses.
• Minimum of 2 years of recent (within 12 months) clinical nursing experience in an Ambulatory Clinic/Practice setting required. Experience only in an ambulatory procedural area or emergency room is not sufficient.
• Nursing experience with telephone triage required, where telephone triage was the main responsibility. This includes:
  • Assessing the severity of symptoms.
  • Communicating urgent patient needs to the Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP).
  • Referral to appropriate setting or level of care.
  • Documenting interventions and an individualized plan of care using an EMR.
  • Educating patients and families on disease processes and interventions.
  • Preliminary interpretation of data and providing home health advice.
  • Making triage decisions quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Ensuring continuity of care.
• Minimum of 2 years of Surgical, Colorectal, Wound/Stoma, and/or Gastroenterology-related experience is strongly preferred.
• Case Management experience preferred.
• Experience with team-based care is preferred.
• Membership in professional organizations is recommended; nursing certification in Ambulatory Care or an Ambulatory Specialty area is preferred.
• Certification in Ambulatory Care or an ambulatory specialty area within 2 years is preferred.
• Able to work weekend rotation per the MNA contract.

Pay

$41.71 - $105.65/hour (Grade MNA333). At Mass General Brigham, base pay is determined by skills, relevant experience, education, certifications, and other essential factors. The provided range is an estimate based on minimum job qualifications.

Schedule

• 40 hours per week, full-time.
• Day shift (United States of America).
• Onsite work location: 45 Francis Street.
