About the role

The City of Hampton is seeking a current Virginia Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)-Intermediate or Paramedic with at least one year of progressive EMS experience. Applicants should value integrity, trust, respect, accountability, creativity, collaboration, and customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Administer emergency medical, basic, and advanced life support services in a 911 setting to the members and visitors of our Hampton community under the direction of our Operational Medical Doctor.
  • Respond to emergency medical calls and provide advanced pre-hospital patient care.
  • Achieve a calm demeanor under pressure and enjoy a fast-paced work environment.

  • Provide excellent customer service and be an effective oral and written communicator.
  • Perform typical tasks such as assessing patients, administering medications, performing advanced airway management, cardiac monitoring, IV/IO access, and other ALS interventions.
  • Safely transport patients and communicate patient information to receiving medical facilities.
  • Complete electronic patient care reports (ePCR) and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Operate ambulances and emergency response vehicles.
  • Maintain an inventory of medical equipment, supplies, medications, and controlled substances.
  • Clean, inspect, and ensure ambulances and equipment are operational.
  • Collaborate with fire, police, hospitals, and other public safety agencies during emergency incidents.
  • Assist with training EMS personnel and serve as a Field Training Officer when assigned.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Requires a high school diploma or GED, supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to successful completion of the Virginia Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate or Paramedic Program with certification.
  • Must complete the Emergency Vehicle Operator’s course.
  • Must complete NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800.
  • Maintain current Virginia EMT-Intermediate (EMT-I) certification at a minimum. Virginia Paramedic certification is strongly preferred and is required to function independently as Attendant-in-Charge on ALS units per HDFR protocols.
  • Possess and maintain the following certifications: American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS); Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or Pediatric Education for Pre-hospital Professionals (PEPP), when required.
  • Possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
  • Complete pre-employment background and drug testing screening, including, but not limited to, a polygraph examination, Department of Social Services, Office of EMS, and State Police.
  • Participate in a physical fitness and/or work-performance evaluation when required.
  • Complete an annual medical fitness-for-duty evaluation as required by the Department.

Additional Requirements

  • Requires effective communication with internal and external customers.
  • Duties may be performed on various shifts to include 8, 12, and 24-hour shifts, and 40-48 hours per workweek.
  • Overtime is authorized for hours worked over 40 hours per workweek.
  • The incumbent will be considered "essential personnel" during City emergencies or at the direction of the City Manager, which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
