This position manages all yards receiving processes to ensure safe, humane handling of livestock while providing accurate counts and identification, including ante-mortem inspection. The role requires comprehensive knowledge of the live scale process and collaboration with FSIS inspectors, livestock producers, haulers, handlers, maintenance, procurement, and plant operations. The individual must work closely with other Yards and Operations management teams to achieve objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee safe and humane handling of livestock.
  • Ensure accurate counts and identification, including ante-mortem inspection.
  • Manage the live scale process.
  • Coordinate with FSIS inspectors, livestock producers, haulers, handlers, maintenance, procurement, and plant operations.
  • Collaborate with Yards and Operations management teams to meet objectives.
  • Supervise time and attendance as needed.
  • Perform physical tasks such as opening/closing gates, moving livestock, and tattooing hogs using livestock handling tools.
  • Assist in humanely loading downed hogs into skid loader buckets for transport.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (hard hat, steel toe boots, hearing protection).
  • Maintain awareness of how job functions impact product safety, legality, and quality systems.

Requirements

  • Livestock experience required; swine or cattle experience preferred.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently with livestock haulers and team members.
  • Highly motivated with a focus on running a successful business.
  • Basic computer skills, including managing spreadsheets and email.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and familiarity with the use of the Live Scale.

Qualifications

  • BS degree in Animal Science or Agriculture preferred.

Physical Demands

  • Bending: Minimal bending required.
  • Lifting: Minimal lifting (tools under 5 lbs, including tattoo hammer).
  • Push/Pull: Some pushing/pulling required (e.g., opening/closing gates, moving downed hogs, tattooing).
  • Reaching: Required for moving hogs and tattooing.
  • Grasping: Full hand grasp for handling tools, tattoo hammer, and gates.
  • Standing: Required for the entire shift.
  • Force: Minimal force for most tasks; moderate to heavy force may be needed for loading downed hogs.
  • Work Environment: Seasonal temperatures, potentially exceeding 95°F. May require wearing protective gear.
