Alec Kimmelman has been appointed as the next CEO and dean of NYU Langone Health. NYU Langone Health, a leading academic medical center, has appointed Alec Kimmelman as its next chief executive officer and dean of NYU Grossman School of Medicine.

Role

A distinguished radiation oncologist and director of the Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center, Dr. Alec Kimmelman will assume his new role on September 1, succeeding the retiring CEO and dean, Robert I. Grossman. His appointment was confirmed by a unanimous vote of NYU Langone’s Board of Trustees. Kenneth Langone, chair of the Board and co-chair of the search committee, stated: "We are excited to name Dr. Kimmelman to this position given his extraordinary talent, leadership experience, and strong character. He is the right choice to build on Bob’s legacy and lead our institution into its next phase of innovation and impact. Finding Bob’s successor was a formidable task, given his countless contributions to our institution, but we found such a leader in Dr. Kimmelman, who has demonstrated tremendous leadership throughout his career."

Dr. Alec Kimmelman: A Career in Cancer Research and Leadership

Dr. Alec Kimmelman joined NYU Langone in 2016, building a team of top researchers and clinicians advancing cancer care. He serves as director of the Perlmutter Cancer Center, the Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Professor of Radiation Oncology, chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology, and associate dean of Cancer Research at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. A leading NIH-funded investigator, Dr. Kimmelman has studied Ras oncogenes for over 20 years, with a focus on pancreatic cancer biology. His research has uncovered key metabolic pathways in pancreatic cancer, shaping new clinical trials. He has published over 100 articles in prestigious journals, including Cell, Science, Nature, and Cancer Cell. Under his leadership, Perlmutter Cancer Center launched the Center for Molecular Oncology in 2024, integrating liquid biopsy technology to enhance personalized cancer treatment. Dr. Kimmelman earned his MD and PhD from Mount Sinai School of Medicine, trained at Harvard Medical School and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and previously led a pancreatic cancer research program at Dana-Farber while practicing at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He has received numerous accolades, including the Ruth Leff Siegel Award for Excellence in Pancreatic Cancer Research, the NCI Outstanding Investigator Award, and recognition as one of the world’s most influential researchers by Clarivate in 2021.
