About the Role

The Airport Firefighter 2 (APFF 2) works under the supervision of the Base Civil Engineer, Base Fire Chief, Assistant Chiefs, or other appropriate supervisors within the Division of Military and Naval Affairs (DMNA). This position provides fire protection and related services to personnel and resources at various Air National Guard Bases (ANGB) in New York State, in accordance with the Master Cooperative Agreement (MCA) between the State of New York and the National Guard Bureau (NGB), as well as applicable regulations and standards.

Responsibilities

  • Provide supervisory assistance as directed by the Fire Chief or appropriate designee, including shift leadership in their absence.
  • Supervise shift firefighting activities and prepare/conduct firefighting exercises.
  • Provide input on APFF 1 evaluations, shift operations, scheduling, time records, and administrative matters.
  • Make determinations relating to shift operations and/or overtime in the absence of the Fire Chief or Assistant Chiefs.
  • Perform fire suppression and emergency response for aerospace vehicles, including in-flight and ground emergencies.
  • Conduct rescue operations (e.g., aircraft egress, confined space, structural collapse, automobile/equipment extraction).
  • Respond to bomb threats, anti-hijacking, terrorist threats, structural fires, motor vehicle fires, natural cover fires, and wildfires.
  • Handle Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) response and mutual aid/reciprocal agreement responses.
  • Participate in installation exercises, training, and assessments.
  • Provide Emergency Medical Services (EMS) within the scope of training, as determined by the Base Fire Chief.
  • Verify building and extinguisher inspections and maintenance.
  • Assist victims in emergency situations involving fright, panic, injury, or shock.
  • Perform inspections and operator maintenance on assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Report during major incidents and work 24-hour shifts, including weekends and holidays.
  • Monitor alarm, radio, and telephone equipment in the Fire Alarm Communications Center (FACC)/Emergency Communications Center (ECC).
  • Coordinate with base agencies (e.g., Base Defense Operations Center) to obtain/disseminate response information.
  • Initiate dispatch of appropriate response assignments.
  • Conduct facility and fire systems inspections, customer training, fire prevention practices, and extinguisher inspections/maintenance.
  • Perform administrative duties, including computer/data entry tasks.
  • Operate equipment, motor vehicles, and trucks as assigned.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Maintain all required certification levels (failure to do so may result in disciplinary action or termination).
  • Adhere to physical fitness and agility standards, including annual maintenance programs.
  • Report changes in medical conditions to the fire department physician per NFPA standards.
  • Understand and comply with ANGFPA program, DMNA, and assigned ANGB regulations.
  • Maintain CPR and required EMS certifications.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) weighing 50+ lbs.
  • Adhere to grooming and uniform standards per Air National Guard (ANG) requirements.
  • Safely drive and operate all assigned Fire Department vehicles.
  • Push, pull, lift, and carry heavy objects/equipment (135+ lbs, including PPE).
  • Work at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Work outdoors in various temperatures and inclement weather for extended periods.
  • Interact effectively with diverse groups, including co-workers, management, and federal/state personnel.
  • Complete all required training and maintain Fire Department facilities in a clean/orderly manner.
  • Travel as required and prepare clear, concise written materials.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in English (reading/writing) and computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Exhibit reliability, trustworthiness, and strong verbal/written communication skills.
  • Work overtime as required.

Qualifications

  • Meet all requirements of a Firefighter 1, SG-12, including:
    • Current Air Force Specialty Code (AFSC) 3E731/51 with DOD certifications: Fire Fighter II, Airport Fire Fighter, HAZMAT Operations, Driver/Operator Pumper, Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighter (ARFF), and Tender.
    • Completion of DOD Fire Protection School and DoD-sponsored Career Development Courses (CDC).
    • OR equivalent IFSAC or nationally accredited certifications.
  • AFSC 3E751/71 with DOD certifications: Fire Officer I, Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector I, and HAZMAT Incident Commander.
  • OR equivalent IFSAC or nationally accredited certifications.
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Minimum age: 18.
  • Current CPR certification and EMS requirements.
  • Valid New York State driver’s license; must report changes in license status.
  • Upon hire, acquire/maintain ANG requirements for operating firefighting equipment, motor vehicles, and trucks (may include a military driver’s license).
  • Obtain/maintain a favorable background investigation (e.g., NACI or SECRET clearance, depending on base mission).

Working Conditions

  • Routine exposure to risks, irregular hours, and adverse weather conditions.
  • Potential hazards include burns, dehydration, smoke inhalation, physical injury, sensory damage, infectious diseases, hazardous materials, explosions, and high noise levels.
  • May operate or ride emergency vehicles under adverse conditions.

Pay

Current start rate: $59,787. Job rate: $72,429 (all hires begin at the start rate unless prior state experience qualifies for a hiring step increase).

Schedule

  • 24-hour shifts, including weekends and holidays.
  • Schedules may change periodically to meet operational needs.
  • Must maintain contact via cellular telephone or residential phone.
  • Overtime may be required.
