About the role
The Iowa Department of Public Defense is seeking an Airport Firefighter to support the 185th Air Refueling Wing in Sioux City. The successful candidate will perform firefighting, rescue, salvage, fire prevention, and fire protection operations on an assigned shift at a joint-use civil/military airport to save persons, aircraft, and facilities from fires.
Responsibilities
- Actively participate in training programs to meet USAF, ANG, FAA, OSHA, IDPH, AFOSH, and NFPA requirements.
- Participate in the department’s Fire Prevention Program.
- Respond to emergencies to perform rescue operations, provide EMS services, fire suppression, HAZMAT response, and confined space entry and rescue.
- Perform daily vehicle inspections and station duties.
- Participate in a physical conditioning program.
Requirements
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalency.
- Minimum age of eighteen years.
- Possession of one of the following certification combinations:
- International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Professional Qualifications Board (ProBoard) approved Fire Fighter I certification and current National Registry Emergency Medical Service certification; or
- International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Professional Qualifications Board (ProBoard) approved Fire Fighter II certification and current State of Iowa Emergency Medical Service certification.
- Must submit a copy of Firefighter Certification at the time of application.
- Must pass a rigorous physical agility fitness test prior to an offer of employment.
- Must pass a thorough medical examination in compliance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1582 standards upon offer of employment.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
- Must obtain a government vehicle operator’s license within 30 days of employment.
- Must pass a thorough background investigation and obtain a government SECRET security clearance within one year of employment (must maintain clearance to continue employment).
- Must attain the following certifications within specified timeframes:
- IFSAC or ProBoard approved Firefighter II, Airport Firefighter, and Haz-Mat Operations certifications within one year of employment.
- Certifications for all assigned vehicles: Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) driver/operator, Pumper driver/operator, and Mobile Water Supply driver/operator within one year of employment.
- Certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and other emergency care techniques within six months of employment.
- State of Iowa Department of Public Health EMS certification within two years of employment.
Schedule
24 hours on / 48 hours off; 9-hour Kelly Day every 21 days. Shift: 0700–0700.
Pay
$17.31/hour based on an average 53-hour work week. Pay increases will be made after the first 6 months and then annually, provided performance meets or exceeds expectations.
