Aircraft (Rotary Wing) Technical Inspector
About the role
The Aircraft (Rotary Wing) Technical Inspector ensures that assigned aircraft are maintained within required specifications and are airworthy before operation. They inspect repairs and modifications, develop and implement quality control programs, evaluate personnel, conduct audits, and manage material deficiencies.
Responsibilities
- Plans, conducts, and supervises aircraft technical inspections.
- Evaluates personnel, including verification of skills, training, and experience.
- Performs audits and inspections of work centers and ongoing maintenance actions, procedures, equipment, and facilities.
- Examines parts and components for conformance to design specifications to determine serviceability.
- Monitors timeliness and applicability of maintenance technical data and technical library.
- Reviews maintenance source documents, inspection records, notes recurring discrepancies or trends, and initiates appropriate action.
- Manages the material deficiency and technical order improvement program.
- Reviews engineering investigation requests.
- Initiates and reviews quality deficiency reports, technical deficiency reports, and hazardous material reports, ensuring they are accurate, clear, concise, and comprehensive.
- Conducts safety inspections, training, and drills.
- Inspects and verifies proper completion and documentation of safety and flight discrepancies.
- Briefs and debriefs pilots and crew members assigned to functional check flights.
- Participates in maintenance test flights and operation checks as required.
- Ensures compliance with aircraft configuration control, Army oil analysis Program, and test measuring diagnostic equipment calibration.
- Provides guidance to lower-level technicians in aircraft repair and technical inspection techniques and procedures.
- Prepares evaluations, special reports, and records pertaining to aircraft maintenance repair and related activities.
- Makes entries in aircraft logs and records.
- Performs other qualified duties as requested.
Requirements
- Five (5) years of recent applicable aircraft maintenance experience.
- One (1) year experience performing Technical Inspections on rotary wing aircraft.
- A valid and up-to-date (FAA) Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) license.
- A Valid FAA Inspection Authorization (IA).
- If no IA, must have a minimum of five (5) years as an inspector on helicopters.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization.
- Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
- Valid Driver’s License.
Skills
- Knowledge of electrical, mechanical, electronic, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems or other technology as applicable to fabrication, repair, operation, and maintenance requirements.
- Efficient in record keeping and preparation of reports; capable of reviewing other people's work and determining accuracy and conformity to standards.
- Proficient in the use of the Unit Level Logistics System-Aviation Enhanced (ULLS-AE), the current maintenance management system utilized to maintain Army aircraft forms and records.
- Thorough comprehensive knowledge of aircraft mechanical component troubleshooting/repair procedures and replacement of components.
- Thorough knowledge of aircraft sheet metal/structural modification and repair and the ability to determine functionality of non-complex electrical systems.
- Detailed knowledge of aircraft unique tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, cable tensiometers, sheet metal brakes and sheers, etc. is required.
- Ability to provide technical support to structural/mechanical engineers and customers.
- Excellent organizational skills in prioritizing workload to meet aircraft delivery schedule.
Physical Requirements/Working Environment
- Must be able to walk and stand on level and/or inclined surfaces for extended periods throughout the day.
- Must be able to climb stairs, ramps, ladders, and work stands.
- Must be able to crouch, crawl, grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbow/knee, and reach above/below shoulders.
- May be required to lift heavy objects whose weight may exceed 50 pounds.
- Must be able to type using a standard keyboard to communicate through e-mail and various software applications.
- Will handle dirty parts and lubricants.
- Will be required to wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Must be able to pass a Respirator Physical and Fit Test qualification.
- May be required to operate power vehicles, machinery, hand tools, ground support equipment, fork lift, etc.
- Must be able to lift/push/pull minimum of 50 pounds.
- May work in normal office environment, maintenance shop, or outside.
- Must be able to work in a shop where the environment is drafty, noisy, and dirty.
- May be exposed to extreme noise from operating equipment.
- May be exposed to electrical shock hazards or work near moving mechanical parts or vehicles.
