About the role

The Aircraft (Rotary Wing) Technical Inspector ensures assigned aircraft are maintained within required specifications and are airworthy before operation. Responsibilities include planning, conducting, and supervising inspections; developing and implementing quality control and ground safety programs; evaluating personnel; auditing work centers; examining parts and components; managing material deficiencies; reviewing maintenance documents; conducting safety inspections; providing guidance to technicians; preparing reports; and performing other duties as requested.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects repairs and modifications of aircraft structures, components, and engines.
  • Plans, conducts, and supervises aircraft technical inspections.
  • Evaluates personnel, verifying skills, training, and experience.
  • Audits and inspects work centers and ongoing maintenance actions.
  • Examines parts and components for conformance to design specifications.
  • Reviews maintenance source documents, inspection records, and notes recurring discrepancies.
  • Manages material deficiency and technical order improvement programs.
  • Reviews engineering investigation requests.
  • Initiates and reviews quality deficiency reports, technical deficiency reports, and hazardous material reports.
  • Conducts safety inspections, training, and drills.
  • Inspects and verifies proper completion and documentation of safety and flight discrepancies.
  • Briefs and debriefs pilots and crew members.
  • Participates in maintenance test flights and operation checks.
  • Ensures compliance with aircraft configuration control, Army oil analysis program, and test measuring diagnostic equipment calibration.
  • Provides guidance to lower-level technicians in aircraft repair and technical inspection techniques.
  • Prepares evaluations, special reports, and records pertaining to aircraft maintenance repair and related activities.
  • Performs other qualified duties as requested.

Requirements

  • Five (5) years of recent applicable aircraft maintenance experience.
  • One (1) year experience performing Technical Inspections on rotary wing aircraft.
  • A valid and up-to-date (FAA) Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) license.
  • A Valid FAA Inspection Authorization (IA).
  • If no IA, must have a minimum of five (5) years as an inspector on helicopters.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization.
  • Valid Driver’s License.

Skills

  • Knowledge of electrical, mechanical, electronic, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems or other technology as applicable to fabrication, repair, operation, and maintenance requirements.
  • Efficient in record keeping and preparation of reports; capable of reviewing other people's work and determining accuracy and conformity to standards.
  • Proficient in the use of the Unit Level Logistics System-Aviation Enhanced (ULLS-AE), the current maintenance management system utilized to maintain Army aircraft forms and records.
  • Thorough comprehensive knowledge of aircraft mechanical component troubleshooting/repair procedures and replacement of components.
  • Thorough knowledge of aircraft sheet metal/structural modification and repair and the ability to determine functionality of non-complex electrical systems.
  • Detailed knowledge of aircraft unique tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, cable tensiometers, sheet metal brakes and sheers, etc.
  • Ability to provide technical support to structural/mechanical engineers and customers.
  • Excellent organizational skills in prioritizing workload to meet aircraft delivery schedule.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment

  • Must be able to walk and stand on level and/or inclined surfaces for extended periods throughout the day.
  • Must be able to climb stairs, ramps, ladders, and work stands.
  • Must be able to crouch, crawl, grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbow/knee and reach above/below shoulders.
  • May be required to lift heavy objects whose weight may exceed 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to type using a standard keyboard to communicate through e-mail and various software applications.
  • Will handle dirty parts and lubricants.
  • Will be required to wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Must be able to pass a Respirator Physical and Fit Test qualification.
  • May be required to operate power vehicles, machinery, hand tools, ground support equipment, fork lift, etc.
  • Must be able to lift/push/pull minimum of 50 pounds.
  • May work in normal office environment, maintenance shop, or outside.
  • Must be able to work in a shop where the environment is drafty, noisy, and dirty.
  • May be exposed to extreme noise from operating equipment.
  • May be exposed to electrical shock hazards or work near moving mechanical parts or vehicles.
