About the Role
This skilled position is responsible for the safe operation of sampling and testing soils, aggregates, and asphalt materials. Duties include proper collection of materials, accurate analysis, and thorough reporting and documentation of results. Driving a company vehicle is required.
Responsibilities
- Safely and efficiently collect samples for testing asphalt materials.
- Set up, operate, and maintain nuclear density gauges for asphalt and soils compaction.
- Apply knowledge of state DOT and governing agency job specifications.
- Perform project test procedures according to individual certification levels.
- Conduct sampling, testing, and reporting procedures per established protocol, recording results promptly and accurately.
- Promptly report non‑compliant tests to the project superintendent when applicable.
- Maintain daily records of test results, prepare daily reports, and submit results to the project lead technician or main lab supervisor.
- Perform asphalt coring operations for density and investigation as necessary.
- Carry out daily housekeeping and maintain a clean lab environment.
- Follow all company policies and MSHA & OSHA regulations for safe working procedures and environmental best practices.
- Report any problems to the Foreman, Superintendent, Safety Manager, or Human Resources Manager.
- Perform job tasks in accordance with industry best practices and equipment requirements (lifting, carrying, sitting, walking, climbing).
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Education and Experience
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
- One to two years prior QC experience preferred.
Work Requirements
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
- Ability to write simple correspondence.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to present information effectively in one‑on‑one and small‑group situations.

- Proficiency with keyboard typing and database software.

Physical Requirements
The employee is frequently required to sit, climb, and use hands to signal and handle equipment; occasionally required to stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, and reach with hands and arms above the shoulders. The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 50 lb. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception.
Work Environment
While performing duties, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, outside weather, and extreme cold or heat. Noise levels are usually moderate to loud.
