Aggregate Laboratory Technician

About the role

Provide inspection, testing services, and documentation for plant facilities. Develop and maintain relationships with key customers, facility managers, DOT personnel, State, County, and Municipal personnel, as well as suppliers. The Quality Control Technician evaluates volumetric data to adjust mix production, ensuring compliance for all applications and projects.

Responsibilities

• Use accepted methods to inspect, sample, and test aggregates, asphalt, or other materials for quality control.
• Sample and test mixtures to ensure compliance with contract specifications and quality control tolerances.
• Monitor and test process functions and materials daily to meet or exceed agency or customer requirements.
• Prepare and record accurate information; maintain a test results database.
• Obtain required certifications in a timely manner.
• Maintain all laboratory equipment, including tracking certification paperwork for lab scales and other equipment requiring annual re-certification.
• Follow quality control plans and guidelines as assigned.
• Follow directions from the manager regarding daily tasks and expectations.
• Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures; report potential safety issues.
• Follow all company policies and OSHA/MSHA regulations for safe working procedures.
• Perform general cleaning of work areas.
• Regular and predictable attendance at assigned times is required.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Minimum of a high school diploma or GED required.
• Must obtain and maintain DOT certifications required to test asphalt as per state regulations.
• Less than one year of experience in a related field is required.
• Must be 18 years or older.
• Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen, and criminal background check.
• Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
• Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
• Valid driver’s license and qualification under the fleet safety program.
• Willingness to travel and work away from home when required.
• Willingness to work nights and weekends when necessary.
• Must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as required by OSHA/MSHA (e.g., safety glasses, hard-toe shoes, coveralls).

Skills

• Knowledge and understanding of all DOT regulations, including sampling frequency, methods, gradation, and quality requirements.
• Proven ability to develop relationships and work with teams as both a leader and participant.
• Effective interpersonal and communication skills; ability to build rapport, listen, present, and give/receive feedback.
• Ability to perform simple mathematical calculations.
• Basic computer skills, including email and simple spreadsheets.

Physical Requirements

• Able to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to manipulate objects or controls, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, and hear.
• May require sitting for extended periods of time.
• Ability to lift, carry, and hold materials, tools, and supplies.
• Vision abilities (with correction) include close, distance, peripheral, depth, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Able to stand on hard surfaces for extended periods of time.
• Must be able to exert negligible force constantly to move objects, up to 10 lbs. frequently, and up to 20 lbs. occasionally.

Work Environment

• Able to work in all weather conditions.
• Able to work extended hours if needed.
