Afterschool Youth Worker – P.S. 199Q (Part-Time; Seasonal)
About the role
Youth Workers report directly to the Program Director and work alongside instructors and other staff to support the daily operation of the afterschool program. They help provide a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment for children ages 5–12 by assisting with activities, supervising students, and encouraging positive participation. Youth Workers also support instructors during STEM, art, dance, gym, and other enrichment activities while building positive relationships with participants. This position is part of the Youth and Family Services Department at Sunnyside Community Services, which offers early childhood, afterschool, youth development, and family support programs that strengthen our community.
Responsibilities
- Ensure the safety of all program participants
- Help maintain daily attendance and meal roster logs
- Provide constant supervision to assigned groups of children
- Ensure that classroom and activity areas are cleaned and organized
- Motivate and maintain active involvement of program participants
- Attend all required meetings and training
Qualifications
- Must be 18 years old or older
- High School Diploma or equivalent required, some college or relevant degree preferred
- A minimum of one year of experience working with children, experience working in an after-school environment preferred
- Excellent organizational and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
- Before hiring, fingerprints and background checks from the Department of Education and Department of Health must be finalized, along with a completed medical form
- Prior to employment, two professional reference letters and one personal reference letter are mandatory
- Must be able to work 13 school holidays throughout the year
- This position runs through September 2026–June 2027 with possible opportunities for future employment

Pay & schedule
- Compensation: $17.00 – $18.00 per hour (17.5 hours per week)
- Schedule: 2 – 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday (September 2026 through June 2027)
- Location: P.S. 199Q in Sunnyside, Queens (Elementary School – Grades K-5)
- Reports to: Program Director
