After-School Literacy Instructor – P.S. 199Q (Part-Time)
If you love working with kids and are looking to get into the field of education, this part-time role is a great way to start. The Literacy Instructor will report directly to our Program Director and work with another staff member to ensure the overall care and safety of children ages 5-12.
About the role
This position is part of our Youth and Family Services at Sunnyside Community Services, which includes a pre-kindergarten program, after-school programs for elementary and middle school students, high school job readiness, career readiness, enrichment programming, and Adult and Immigrant Services.
Responsibilities
- Teach literacy to 1-2 classes daily, each lasting 45-55 minutes.
- Develop age-appropriate lesson plans and submit them on time.
- Tailor curriculum for each level of instruction to match student needs.
- Prepare materials and examples in advance for student activities.
- Lead the preparation of a parent showcase at the end of each of the 3 units.
- Collaborate with other instructors and group leaders to align goals for the parent showcase.
- Meet regularly with the supervisor to share best practices and address challenges.
- Maintain cleanliness of the program space and ensure supplies are well organized and in good condition.
Requirements
- Must be 18 years old or older.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; some college or a relevant degree in education or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of two years of experience working with children; experience in an after-school environment preferred.
- Fingerprints and background checks from the Department of Education and Department of Health, along with a completed medical form, must be finalized before hiring.
- Two professional reference letters and one personal reference letter are mandatory prior to employment.
- Must be available to work 13 school holidays throughout the year.

Pay
$20.00–$25.00 per hour (17.5 hours per week).
Schedule
2:00 PM – 5:30 PM, Monday through Friday (September 2026 – June 2027).
Location: P.S. 199Q in Sunnyside, Queens (Elementary School – Grades K-5).
