About the Role

The Department of Ethnic Studies at Chaffey College, as a new department, is seeking dynamic scholar-teachers whose scholarship and teaching are centered on the cultures and histories of communities that have played a vital force in shaping America. The department is committed to the scholarly teachings and representations of the four core disciplines in the field: Native American Studies, African American Studies, Chicanx and Latinx Studies, and Asian American Studies.

African-American Studies at Chaffey College is centered on Black lives and experiences. The curriculum explores African American ancestral histories, societal contributions, and experiences, emphasizing the profound contributions of African-American cultures to the Americas and the world. This approach positions African-American Studies as authentically American while embedded within a global Black diaspora stretching from the Caribbean to Europe to Asia.

Opportunities may include teaching in prisons and/or high school dual enrollment programs.

Responsibilities

• Teach courses in African American Studies and/or related Ethnic Studies disciplines.
• Develop and implement teaching strategies focused on engaging students in person and online.
• Utilize innovative online teaching methods, instructional design, and assessment strategies, particularly through Canvas.

Requirements

All applicants must meet the California State Community College Minimum Qualifications for Ethnic Studies (below). Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee employment or an interview.

• Master's degree in African-American/Black/Africana Studies; OR
• Bachelor's degree in African-American/Black/Africana Studies AND Master's degree in Ethnic Studies; OR
• Valid lifetime credential that authorizes service as an Ethnic Studies instructor in a California Community College; OR
• The equivalent.
• Demonstrated evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds in a community college environment.

Qualifications

• Recent experience teaching Ethnic Studies courses in person and online through Canvas, preferably at the community college level.
• Evidence of developing and implementing teaching strategies focused on engaging students in their learning.
• High level of professional and pedagogical expertise in Ethnic Studies, African American Studies, Asian American Studies, Chicanx/Latinx Studies, or Native American Studies from an accredited college or university.
• Demonstrated commitment to equity in the community college setting.
• Preference may be given to candidates with recent experience teaching African American Studies (ETHN-4).
