About the role

The Advocate Specialist works in the mental health crisis unit on the grounds of the assigned hospital and engages and provides peer support and advocacy to individuals waiting for a psychiatric evaluation.

Responsibilities

  • Engage and provide peer support to individuals waiting for a psychiatric evaluation.
  • Serve as a point of contact for individuals in the Emergency Department, offering transparent feedback and information.
  • Work within the framework of hospital procedures and policies.
  • Provide support and advocacy based on wellness and recovery principles.

Requirements

  • MUST CLEAR HOSPITAL PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENING PRIOR TO ONBOARDING.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Wellness and Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) training is preferred.
  • Experience providing peer support and a commitment to helping others.
  • Excellent communication, assessment, and interpersonal skills.
  • Empathetic with good listening skills, patient and emotionally resilient.
  • Willingness to disclose and speak openly about current or prior use of mental health and/or addiction services.
  • Able to work with individuals with mental illness in a caring and professional manner.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office).
  • Bilingual skills are preferred/ a plus.
  • Valid NJ Driver’s License with acceptable driving record.
  • Lived Experience: CSPNJ prioritizes hiring people who use their own life experience dealing with mental health/substance use issues to inspire and support others.
