About the role
The Advanced Practice Nursing Manager oversees the clinical and administrative operations for a designated group of Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) in ambulatory oncology settings. This position requires a Master's degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program, with at least 5 years of relevant clinical experience, and current certification and registration as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in New York State.
Responsibilities
- Affirms the health status of patients/families through comprehensive health history and physical examination.
- Initiates therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, consultations, and laboratory examinations, prescribes medication regimens, and modifies care plans based on standards of care and practice guidelines.
- Educates and counsels patients on health promotion, maintenance, disease prevention, and management of acute/chronic illnesses.
- Documents findings and care plans in the patient's medical record and consults with physicians as necessary.
- Fosters continuity of care by initiating referrals to specialty services and coordinating with interdisciplinary teams.
- Participates in team meetings and conferences to enhance an interdisciplinary approach to care delivery.
- Performs a patient record review with the collaborating physician every three months, if using a collaborative practice agreement.
- Maintains expertise in the designated specialty areas of practice.
- Collaborates with the Director of Advanced Practice Nursing and department chairs/chief to recruit, retain, and manage advanced practice nurses.
- Evaluates APN staff performance, mentors, coaches, counsels, and disciplines staff as needed.
- Prepares, implements, and monitors budgets, including capital equipment allocation, budget variances, and management of overtime and vacancies.
- Facilitates on-boarding and orientation, as well as ongoing professional development of nurse practitioners.
- Coordinates clinical activities to achieve established safety and quality measures.
- Provides leadership and develops effective team-building strategies.
- Sets departmental goals in collaboration with division chiefs and other key personnel.
- Supports and role models the mission, philosophy, goals, and objectives of the Department of Nursing, the institution of practice, and the Mount Sinai Health System.
- Participates in relevant hospital-wide committees and engages with collaborating physicians, division chiefs, and department administrators to ensure clinical practice and systems support clinical care.
- Promotes utilization of APNs to optimize their scope of clinical practice.
Qualifications
- Master's degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.
- At least 5 years of relevant clinical experience.
- Current certification and registration as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in New York State.
- National Board Certification from NCCPA or Advanced Practice Nursing.
- Credentialed and privileged as a PA or NP.
- DEA Licensure.
- BLS, ACLS, and Infection Control Certification.
