About the role
The Advanced Practice Provider in Orthopaedic Services is responsible for the coordination of care of orthopaedic patients. In the operating room and on the nursing units, the position will first assist the surgeon by preparing grafts, closing the incision and first and second assisting the surgeon as needed. On the inpatient nursing unit, this position will coordinate the patients' care and assist the surgeon in directing the post-operative nursing care for these patients.
Responsibilities
- Daily and rotating inpatient weekend rounding and/or call is expected in this position.
- Functions as liaison between patient/family and other health care team members and the physician.
- Verbal and written communication is complete, accurate, and timely.
- Deals with conflict and confrontation in a respectful and professional manner.
- Participates on committees as assigned.
- Explains procedures to nursing staff to assist in care planning.
- Provides patients/families with explanations of treatments to assist in decision-making / informed consent process.
- Establishes and maintains effective, collaborative working relationships with other members of the health care team across the organization.
- Obtains informed consent as needed.
- Communicates information to care team in a timely and effective manner.
- Participates in team conferences, family meetings, etc.
- Assists with research studies as requested.
- Interviews patients and collects information including authorization forms.
- Discusses cases with surgeons.
- Maintains appropriate documentation and databases as needed.
- Effectively problem-solves.
- Maintains knowledge of regulatory influences (CMS, JCAHO) and applies those standards to clinical practice.
- Improves/expands clinical expertise through reading, attending in-services, conferences, etc.
- Completes annual required education.
- Participates in local/national professional organizations.
- Keeps current in clinical and education practice issues both regionally and nationally through networking, reading and dialogue.
- Maintains own professional competency, certifications and visibility.
Qualifications
- Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program.
- Licensed as a Physician Assistant by the State of Minnesota. Physician Assistant Certification required OR Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the State of MN. Current Nurse Practitioner Certification required.
- BLS or ACLS certification required.

- Knowledge of personal computers and appropriate software.
- Ability to access and analyze pertinent information in order to make care decisions.
- Ability to First and Second assist including closing wounds, preparing graphs, etc.
- Ability to apply and remove casts and splints.
Benefits
Per Diem APP Ortho positions are required to work at least 1 weekend per quarter, or as determined by Ortho department.
Pay
Salary range: $60,000 - $90,000 annually.
