Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA) - Inpatient 2 (Swing) - Hem Onc

MCW’s Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology and Oncology is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to provide primary or specialty medical care within a defined scope of practice in collaboration with or under the supervision of a licensed physician, following MCW, Froedtert Hospital, and Children’s Wisconsin policies and procedures. This position is based at Froedtert and MCW/CFAC and other inpatient units.

About the role

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, delivering diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients on the inpatient Hematology/Oncology/BMT services. The APP ensures an environment of safe, evidence-based, high-quality care.

Responsibilities

• Assume in-house first call for the Hematology/Oncology/BMT inpatient units during designated coverage hours.
• Provide cross-coverage and respond promptly to all pages and questions related to patient care on assigned inpatient services.
• Conduct initial assessments for oncology patients admitted to the hospital.
• Manage urgent patient care issues related to internal medicine or critical care needs.
• Perform post-admission assessments during designated hours for patients with a change in condition.
• Participate in sign-out activities from the daytime care team starting at 2:00 pm and sign off to the night team at midnight.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions requiring Hematology/Oncology/BMT intervention.
• Write accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, and admission/transfer orders.
• Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests; communicate and document findings appropriately.
• Perform procedures beyond core privileges as identified by the Hematology/Oncology/BMT division.
• Facilitate communication with patients, families, and staff to promote continuity of care.
• Attend required training and meet key regulatory requirements (e.g., privileging institution, CMS, The Joint Commission).
• Evaluate quality outcomes for patients through participation in the development of quality indicators and outcomes dashboards.
• Stay current with developments and trends in the Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant field through education, literature, and professional associations.
• Participate in ongoing clinical research projects related to hematology/oncology/BMT.

Core Advanced Practice Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifying normal and abnormal findings (physical, cognitive, and psychosocial).
• Order and interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests.
• Develop pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
• Monitor the effectiveness of the plan of care.
• Educate patients on disease processes and treatment plans.
• Perform procedures as trained and credentialed.
• Document within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and complete other necessary paperwork.
• Collaborate and consult with physicians and other healthcare providers as needed.
• Educate, counsel, and assist patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance, and preventive behaviors.

Qualifications

Preferred Experience

• Internal medicine knowledge and skills.
• Five years of experience as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner, with at least 1–2 years in a clinic or hospital setting working with chemotherapy, hematology/oncology, or BMT patients.
• Critical care, urgent care, ED, or ICU experience.

Minimum Education

• Advanced Practice Nurse: Master’s Degree or higher in Nursing.
• Physician Assistant: Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies.

Minimum Requirements

• Advanced Practice Nurse (or eligible):
  • Wisconsin RN license.
  • Wisconsin Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber License.
  • Certification as an Advanced Practice Nurse.
  • Certification as an Adult Care NP and/or Acute Care NP preferred.
  • AHA BCLS certification.
  • CITI Certification (to be completed within 90 days of hire).
  • ACLS Certification (required or to be completed within 90 days of hire).
  • DEA license.
• Physician Assistant (or eligible):
  • Wisconsin PA license.
  • Certification by NCCPA.
  • AHA BCLS certification.
  • CITI Certification (to be completed within 90 days of hire).
  • ACLS Certification (required).
  • DEA license.

Schedule

Alternating schedule: one week on, one week off.

• Monday–Thursday: 2:00 pm–12:00 am.
• Friday: 1:00 pm–9:00 pm.
• Saturday and Sunday: 7:00 am–5:00 pm.
