About the role

The Department of Medicine – Division of General Internal Medicine is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to support the Hospitalist Medicine Inpatient service. This role provides initial and ongoing assessment and management of urgent care issues related to internal medicine or critical care needs. Responsibilities include admitting patients to medical teams and providing on-call coverage for patients admitted to the hospitalist service (cross coverage). The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as a member of a multidisciplinary healthcare team contributing to excellence in program administration, patient care, patient safety, research, quality improvement, and teaching.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams in diagnosis and treatment of conditions requiring medical intervention in an inpatient environment as a member of the Hospital Service.
• Write accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, and/or admission and transfer orders.
• Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicate and document information.
• Perform procedures beyond core as identified by the Hospitalist services.
• Facilitate and communicate with patient, family, and staff to promote continuity of care across the continuum of care.
• Attend required training and meet key regulatory requirements, including those of the privileging institution, CMS, and the Joint Commission.
• Evaluate quality outcomes for patients through participation in the development of quality indicators and outcomes dashboard.
• Acquire information on current developments and trends in the Physician Assistant and/or Nurse Practitioner field through educational programs, in-services, professional associations, and current literature.
• Perform comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifying normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive, and psychosocial status.
• Develop pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
• Monitor effectiveness of the plan of care.
• Educate patients on disease and treatment plans.
• Perform procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
• Document within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and complete other necessary documents.
• Collaborate and/or consult with physicians and other healthcare providers as appropriate.
• Educate, counsel, and assist patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities, and preventive behaviors.

Requirements

Preferred Experience

• Previous hospital medicine or inpatient experience preferred.
• Clinical rotations in internal or hospitalist medicine a plus.

Minimum Requirements

Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner)

• Master’s Degree or higher in Nursing.
• Wisconsin RN License.
• Wisconsin Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber License.
• Acute Care preferred, Adult or FNP considered.
• AHA BLS, DEA.

Physician Assistant

• Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies.
• Wisconsin Physician Assistant License.
• Certification by NCCPA.
• AHA BLS, DEA.

Schedule

Full Time 1.0 FTE; Rotating monthly schedule of 8-10.5 hour shifts with an average 36-hour work week. Shifts vary:

• 4pm-12am, 3pm-1am, or 5pm-1am, 4pm-2am.
• Weekends: 12pm-10:30pm.
• 1 major and 1 minor holiday per year.
• On average, work every 3rd weekend.

Position Highlights

• Collaborative practice model with a 2:8 MD/APP ratio at night.
• Census/Average Patients: Typically, 8-10 encounters per day, shift and experience dependent.
• 40 hours of CME per academic year; prorated based on start date.
