Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA) - Inpatient 2 - Nocturnist

About the role

The Medical College of Wisconsin’s Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology and Oncology is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to provide primary or specialty medical care within the inpatient setting. This position is in Milwaukee, WI at Froedtert and MCW/CFAC, other Inpatient Units and 24 hour clinic.

Responsibilities

• Performs comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive and psychosocial status.
• Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests.
• Develops pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
• Maintains and monitors effectiveness of plan of care.
• Educates patients on disease and treatment plans.
• Performs procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
• Documents within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.
• Collaborates and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
• Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.

Department Specific Responsibilities

• Collaborates with interdisciplinary health care teams in diagnosis and treatment of conditions requiring Hematology/Oncology/BMT intervention in inpatient environment and 24 hr clinic as a member of the HemOnc/BMT inpatient service.
• Writes accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, and/or admission and transfer orders.
• Orders, performs, and interprets screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicates and documents information.
• Privileged to perform procedures beyond core as identified by the Hematology/Oncology/BMT services.
• Facilitates and communicates with patient, family and staff to promote continuity of care across the continuum of care.
• Attends required training and meets key regulatory requirements, including those of the privileging institution, CMS, and the Joint Commission.
• Evaluates quality outcomes for the patients receiving care of this team through participation in the development of quality indicators and outcomes dashboard.
• Acquires information on the most current developments and trends in the Physician Assistant field and/or Nurse Practitioner field, through educational programs, in-services, professional associations, and current literature.
• Participates in ongoing clinical research projects related to the field of hematology/oncology/BMT.
• Provides initial assessment and initial and immediate on-site management of patient needs at night in conjunction with corresponding fellows/attendings.
• Performs admission history and physical documentation, enters and communicates orders, performs comprehensive assessments, responds to nursing/other care giver concerns, initiates appropriate care and evaluates care outcomes.
• Schedules shifts as per the rotating nocturnist schedule.

Qualifications

• Advanced Practice Nurse: Master’s Degree or higher in Nursing from a nationally accredited organization.
• Physician Assistant: Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies from an ARC-PA-accredited organization.
• Five-year experience as a Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner with at least 1-2 years in a clinic or hospital environment working with chemotherapy or hematology/oncology/BMT patients.
• Preferred: Certification as Acute Care NP and/or Adult Care NP preferred.
• Required: ACLS Certification required.
• DEA Physician Assistant Wisconsin Physician Assistant License.
• NCCPA Certification by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
