About the role

The Pediatric Surgery APP works collaboratively with pediatric surgeons, residents, and other healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality, family-centered surgical care. This full-time position includes coverage across Arnold Palmer Hospital and Winnie Palmer Hospital.

Responsibilities

  • Inpatient Management
    • Participate in daily rounds with surgeons and general surgery residents.
    • Absorb patient care in Pediatric Critical Care, Step-Down, and Acute Care Floors.
    • Coordinate perioperative care including social work involvement and consults.
    • Communicate with nursing staff, other APPs, and attending physicians.
    • Provide patient education and support.
    • Manage wounds and perform surgical dressing changes.
    • Oversee discharge planning and facilitate multidisciplinary rounds.
    • Primary responsibility for NICU patients: Pre-rounding and rounding with surgeons; Perioperative care, order entry, and consent management; Documentation including consults and progress notes; Assist with bedside procedures including setup, consent, and specimen handling; Respond promptly to pages via PerfectServe.
  • Trauma Care
    • Assist surgeons in the trauma bay with procedures and supplies.
    • Document history and physicals for trauma admissions.
    • Facilitate orders, consultations, and patient needs.
    • Communicate with families and perform tertiary trauma surveys.
  • Burn Management
    • Lead outpatient burn clinic: patient education, debridement, dressing changes, documentation.
    • Oversee inpatient burn care and sedated/OR debridement procedures.
    • Communicate findings with surgeons and assist with surgical debridement and grafting.
  • Perioperative Care
    • Cookout outpatient follow-up, supplies, and patient education.
    • Obtain preoperative consents and complete H&Ps.
    • Absorb perioperative issues and discharges as needed in PACU.
  • Pediatric Surgical Consults
    • Evaluate consults at Arnold Palmer and Winnie Palmer Hospitals.
    • Order and interpret imaging and labs, determine disposition.
    • Document consults and staff with on-call physicians.
    • Schedule outpatient follow-up and prepare discharge paperwork.
    • Facilitate OR scheduling and preoperative orders.
  • Outpatient Pediatric Surgery Clinic
    • Conduct APP clinic visits: post-operative, trauma rechecks, acute care.
    • Absorb administrative tasks: paperwork, scheduling, front desk support.
    • Triage phone calls and coordinate with community physicians and specialists.
    • Run weekly laser hair removal clinic for pilonidal sinus disease.
    • Potential to attend satellite and specialty clinics.
  • Administrative Duties
    • Prepare minutes for monthly mortality and morbidity meetings.
    • Maintain REDcaps patient tracking and documentation.
    • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and guideline implementation.
    • Collaborate with APPs and surgeons to enhance surgical care quality.

    Qualifications

    • Education/Training: Graduate of accredited physician assistant program or has obtained an MSN or APRN degree from an accredited nursing school. Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification preferred. Primary Care Pediatric Nurse will be considered based on experience.
    • Licensure/Certification: Current Florida licensure as APRN or PA-C. Board certification via PNCB or NCCPA. Maintain active BLS, PALS, ABLS, and ATLS (if possible).
