About the role

Provide supervision and case management for adult offenders remanded into the custody of the Department of Corrections at Hiland Mountain Correctional Center. Daily responsibilities include:

• Interacting with offenders
• Conducting investigations
• Evaluating and assessing offender needs and risk levels
• Developing and recommending release plans, classification actions, and referrals to programs
• Preparing Parole Board Packets
• Facilitating life skills and rehabilitation for prisoners prior to community release
• Providing professional-level documentation, reports, and written recommendations

Minimum Qualifications

Adult Probation Officer 1 (PJ04A1)

• A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in any field.
• Or Substitution: Four years of paraprofessional experience in probation, parole, pretrial, criminal justice, juvenile justice, social services, corrections, criminal investigation, public safety, or law enforcement.
• Or Substitution: Four years in any combination of postsecondary education from an accredited college and paraprofessional experience (2.67 semester hours or 4 quarter hours of postsecondary education equal one month of experience).

All Adult Probation Officer 1 positions are flexibly staffed. Advancement to Adult Probation Officer 2 occurs upon successful completion of all training, including APSC certification requirements, and supervisor approval.

Adult Probation Officer 2A (PJ04A 2)

• Successful completion of training under a formally established Adult Probation Officer 1-2 (A or B) flexible staffing training plan with the State of Alaska.
• Or: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in any field and one year of professional experience in probation, parole, pretrial, criminal justice, juvenile justice, social services, criminal investigation, public safety, law enforcement, or as a social services case manager or counselor.
• Or Substitution: Five years in any combination of postsecondary education and paraprofessional experience (2.67 semester hours or 4 quarter hours of postsecondary education equal one month of experience).

Special Requirements

At the time of employment, applicants must:

• Be 21 years of age and a United States citizen or national.
• Possess a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent recognized by a state or local school district.
• Hold a valid driver's license issued within the United States.
• Some positions may require carrying a firearm and maintaining firearms proficiency (specified in the position description).
• Be subject to Alaska Police Standards Council (APSC) requirements if not continuously employed since February 9, 1991, in a "correctional officer," "probation officer," or "parole officer" position. Must obtain APSC basic correctional officer certification within 14 months of hire.
• Disclose any employment action resulting in discharge, resignation in lieu of discharge, or discipline at the time of application. Failure to disclose may result in ineligibility.

Eligibility Restrictions

A qualified applicant may not:

• Have been convicted of any felony or a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence by a civilian or military court.
• Have been convicted in the past ten years of a crime of dishonesty, moral turpitude, a crime resulting in serious physical injury, or two or more driving under the influence offenses.
• Have illegally manufactured, transported, or sold a controlled substance in the past 10 years (if under 21 at the time).
• Have illegally used a Schedule IA, IIA, IIIA, IVA, or VA controlled substance in the past 5 years (if 21 or older at the time).
• Have used marijuana in the past year (if 21 or older at the time).
• Have been denied certification by the Alaska Police Standards Council or another certifying agency unless rescinded.
• Have ever used a controlled substance while employed as a certifiable peace officer, correctional officer, adult probation officer, or military law enforcement officer.

Background Investigation

A full criminal history check is required. Applicants must complete and submit a notarized F-3 Personal History Statement Form. Required documents include:

• Certified high school/GED transcripts (sent directly from the institution)
• Birth certificate or valid passport
• Foreign equivalency evaluation (if applicable)
• Naturalization certificate (if applicable)
• DD-214 form (if applicable, must show discharge details)
• Military evaluations (if applicable)

Conditional job offers are contingent upon passing a background investigation, drug screening, medical examination, and psychological evaluation. The Department coordinates and covers the cost of the medical examination.
