Adoption Counselor
About the role
The position is responsible for overseeing and executing all aspects of the adoption program. Responsibilities include processing adoptions, interacting with animals, conducting tours, counseling adopters, coordinating spay/neuter appointments, fostering animals, managing offsite adoptions, and special events. Duties also involve educating potential adopters about animal care and communicating with rescue groups and shelters.
Responsibilities
- Processes adoptions including adoption applications and surveys.
- Makes the best possible match by interacting with animals and talking with prospective adopters.
- Counsels owners with pets and those pets up for re-adoption and assists with alternatives.
- Follows up on adoptions after placement.
- Acts as a point of contact with rescue groups and shelters for animals.
- Communicates with potential adopters on nutrition, care, feeding, and socialization of animals.
- Produces and maintains proper records, reports, and statistics related to the adoption program.
- Works with animal care technicians to support behavior assessments and health screenings on incoming animals.
- Injects identification microchips into animals.
- Moves and removes animal waste from adoption kennels as needed.
Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent required.
- Two (2) years of working with public or volunteer experience preferred.
- Prior experience working with animals a plus, but not required.
- Must be able to communicate with culturally diverse staff and display professional and courteous manner at all times.
Qualifications
- Ability to lift and move objects and animals up to 50 pounds for short distances.
Skills
- Excellent communication skills.

- Proficient in animal care and welfare.
