About the role

The Administrative Law Judge reviews records, conducts hearings, determines pertinent issues, and issues decisions in accordance with CSD rules and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts assigned hearings.
  • Determines if there is a preponderance of evidence to support granting or denying a complaint or grievance.
  • Manages all aspects of the hearing as well as the courtroom environment.
  • Administers oaths for formal hearings.
  • Reviews oral and written testimony.
  • Determines elements of a complete case record.
  • Issues written recommendations that clearly set forth facts, relevant legal standards, jurisdiction, and legal conclusions.
  • Attends and conducts educational training in areas of law under the authority of CSD, as well as general jurisdiction and judicial proceedings.
  • Provides information regarding matters over which CSD has jurisdiction.
  • Performs related work as required and assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be a licensed member of the Oklahoma Bar Association.
  • At least five (5) years of Litigation and/or Administrative Law experience.
  • Significant experience with legal research and writing.
  • Experience using critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrated use and understanding of Office 365 or similar technology.
  • Experience using courtroom technology systems.
  • Must be a self-starter that can manage workload with minimal supervision.
  • Preferred candidates will have experience with law enforcement, including grievances and employment matters, and administrative (government) and employment law.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of legal principles and their application.
  • Legal research methods.
  • Courtroom management and procedure.
  • State statutes, rules and regulations which govern such operations.
  • Administrative and constitutional law.
  • Principles of judicial writing.
  • Rules of evidence.

Skills and Abilities

  • Performing research.
  • Analyzing and applying legal principles, facts, and precedents to legal problems.
  • Presenting Findings of Fact, law, and argument clearly and logically in oral and written form.
  • Proficient communication skills to correspond involving the explanation of legal matters in layman’s terms.
  • Operating technology in the virtual and physical courtroom.
  • Editing legal documents, such as reports and orders.

Additional Job Description

All hearings shall be held virtually via Microsoft Teams. All Administrative Law Judges will need to be able to hear cases in the virtual setting. If an in-person hearing is requested, then the in-person hearing shall be held in the Denver Davison Building in Oklahoma City. All Administrative Law Judges hired must be able to travel to in-person hearings, if necessary. Hearings may be scheduled Monday through Friday, 8am-4:30pm. This schedule may require flexibility based on the needs of the agency.

Conditions of Employment

  • Contingent on a favorable background check.
  • Maintain being a licensed member of the Oklahoma Bar Association in good standing.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Willingness to travel if necessary to hear cases if you are not local to Oklahoma City.
