Utah Valley University’s Department of History and Political Science seeks an adjunct instructor in World History to begin August 2026. UVU is an open-enrollment state university with a strong emphasis on teaching and nationally recognized for high-impact pedagogy. The university enrolls approximately 45,000 students and is located on the western front of the Wasatch Mountains in Orem, Utah, 40 miles south of Salt Lake City.

Responsibilities

  • Design and teach courses in World History.
  • Plan, prepare, and follow an approved course of study with measurable objectives for each course taught.
  • Prepare instructional materials (course outlines, syllabi, exams, mock-ups, visual aids, and instruction sheets).
  • Instruct, manage, and supervise individuals and groups in classrooms and laboratories using appropriate teaching methods.
  • Evaluate instruction and learning through testing methods.
  • Maintain a student-oriented approach to education.
  • Recommend students for advancement and graduation.
  • Maintain and submit accurate reports and records involving student accountability, attendance, performance, and follow-up.
  • Coordinate cooperative work experience programs and students as assigned.
  • Assist counselors, department chairperson, faculty, and staff in maintaining an effective program.
  • Adhere to academic freedom and professional responsibility policies.
  • Maintain safe and desirable classroom and laboratory conditions.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in History or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience teaching in a university setting.
  • Ability to teach World History surveys.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in History.

  • Extensive knowledge of subject matter and course content for classes to be taught, instructional strategies, and techniques.
  • Extensive knowledge of student management, motivation, and evaluation.
  • Extensive knowledge of evaluation of instruction, curriculum development, program development, and evaluation.
  • Thorough knowledge of the appropriate field of study.
  • Thorough knowledge of counseling and advising techniques.
  • Effective human relations and communication skills.
  • Skill in public speaking and report writing.
  • Ability to apply general principles to specific conditions.
  • Ability to follow written and oral procedures and instructions.
  • Ability to work effectively with people.
