Schedule

Monday – Friday, 12:00 PM – 8:30 PM.

Pay

Minimum hourly rate: $33.56 (plus CADC differential). Pay rates for Union positions are set in the Collective Bargaining Agreement with SEIU Local 521. Each position has six steps (Step 1 through Step 6, with Step 6 requiring 15 years of employment).

  • Addictions Counselor I: Step 1 $33.56/hr, Step 6 $37.05/hr
  • Addictions Counselor II: Step 1 $37.45/hr, Step 6 $41.34/hr

Shift differentials apply for non-business-hour shifts:

  • 6.25% for overnight (11:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
  • 4.75% for evening (5:30 PM – 10:59 PM)
  • 4.75% for weekend (12:01 AM Saturday – 11:59 PM Sunday)

Benefits

Competitive benefits package for 30–40-hour week positions, including a defined contribution of up to $15,433.08 per year (prorated for part-time) for a cafeteria plan. Unused funds are paid as taxable earnings.

Responsibilities

  • Provide substance use counseling and case management for a varying caseload, including family involvement, to support recovery, relapse prevention, and community integration.
  • Facilitate one-on-one sessions and groups, developing curricula for relapse prevention, coping skills, harm reduction, and independent living.
  • Engage clients and families in outpatient programs, including visits to homes, hospitals, jails, shelters, and medical facilities.
  • Assist with social integration (housing, employment, education) and coordinate care with medical/mental health professionals.
  • Provide linkage to primary care, insurance benefits, and community resources; assist with budgeting, health/safety planning, and crisis intervention.
  • Complete clinical documentation, treatment plans, admissions/discharge paperwork, and regulatory forms; ensure timely billing and compliance.
  • Perform general office tasks (communications, timecards) and attend staff/program meetings and training.
  • Transport clients/supplies using personal or agency vehicles for agency business.
  • Provide consultation, back-up support, and on-call coverage (including non-standard hours) as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with health/safety regulations and maintain a clean work environment.

Requirements

  • High School diploma/GED + 3 years’ experience or Associate’s degree + 2 years’ experience or Bachelor’s/Master’s degree + 1 year’s experience in addictions/substance use services.
  • Active/current CADC I, CADC II, or CADC III certification (DHCS-approved).
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • Work independently and in teams, with strong verbal/written English communication.
    • Manage multiple tasks, exercise judgment, and remain calm in emergencies.
    • Apply strengths-based, harm-reduction, and social rehabilitation models.
    • Work with diverse populations (e.g., mental illness, criminal justice involvement, homelessness, disabilities).
    • Administer ASAM/DMS assessments and facilitate psychosocial/psychoeducation groups.
    • Use Motivational Interviewing, CBT, and DSM criteria for substance-related disorders.
  • Knowledge of community resources, DMC-ODS, MHSA, and WRAP (desired).
  • Special Requirements:
    • Criminal records clearance (Title XXII compliance).
    • 40+ WPM typing proficiency; basic MS Office/Windows database skills (UNIX familiarity desired).
    • Valid CA Driver License, reliable vehicle, auto insurance, and clean DMV record (Class B license eligibility).
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Constant standing, walking, grasping, lifting (up to 40 lbs.), bending, stooping, crouching, and reaching.
    • Occasional telephone/communication, balancing, climbing, and crawling.
    • Ability to assist in emergency evacuations.
