Position Responsibilities

  • Draft and complete commercial solar Interconnection Application (IA), For Permit (IFP), For Construction (IFC), As-Built, and/or other supplemental documentation. Including, but not limited to, site-plans, electrical line diagrams, calculation pages, zoning drawings, placarding, as well as coordinating and providing structural, mechanical, civil, and electrical drawings by others, necessary for a successful project.
  • Complete solar PV system design, including all calculations, meeting NEC and Namaste Solar Design Standards; interconnection strategy; electrical equipment, racking, equipment mounting, and DAS components; site layout drawings; BOM parts list; and specific installation requirements.
  • Ensure solar PV designs are code (NEC, IBC, IFC) compliant and meet client expectations.
  • Conduct designer site visits, along with Technical Lead and others, to verify existing conditions and requirements for interconnection with the existing electrical service and for PV array layouts.
  • Assist the Project Manager with permit applications and utility interconnection application submittals.
  • Upload design drawings to Procore, a project management software.
  • Aid in preparing final documentation required for project close out.
  • Coordinate with internal Team members to ensure timely submission of deliverables.
  • Participate in project calls and meetings.
  • Maintain technical expertise in current design technology and industry standards.
  • Occasionally assist the Commercial Solar Project Development Designers, Project Managers, or Sales as needed with feedback, and documentation for sales proposals.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficiency with computer aided drafting software such as AutoCAD.
  • Knowledge of jurisdictional requirements, or how to find them, for commercial solar PV system design.
  • Thorough understanding of National Electric Code (NEC), and PV related sections of International Building Code (IBC), and International Fire Code (IFC).
  • Familiarity with commercial solar PV system design.
  • Familiarity with new industry products, applications, and system designs.
  • Effective communication and collaboration.
  • Problem solving and ability to proactively research potential concerns or issues.
  • Proficiency with Excel and other MS Office tools.
  • Familiarity with PVSyst, or ETAP software desirable, but not required.
  • Familiarity with Procore desirable, but not required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Physical demands: While performing the duties of this role, the designer is sometimes required to climb ladders, access and walk on pitched and flat roofs, work with tools such as a tape measure and calipers, take pictures, and occasionally lift or move loads up to 25 pounds. Roof spaces can be very hot, cold, slippery and contain trip hazards. This should be understood and acknowledged by the applicant. Depending on the situation, fall protection may be required to be worn and implemented.
  • Work environment: The noise level in this work environment is usually low to moderate. Work environment is in the office, remote, and out at project sites. If on an active construction site, spatial awareness and understanding of the safety plan and Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) documents are essential. Some time may also be spent in jurisdictional and client offices. The ability to drive for site visits is required.
