Job Summary

Under minimal supervision from the Finance Manager, the Accounting Technician performs varied and complex accounting and administrative functions involving the preparation and maintenance of County financial records. Requires knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and a County-wide knowledge of financial activity, records, policies, procedures and regulations.

Typical Duties And Responsibilities

  • Processes and posts county receipts and verifies against accounts receivable invoice files.
  • Prepares schedule of accounts receivable, quarterly, and annually.
  • Reconciles credit card activity coming into the County.
  • Maintains invoices and claims for payment to ensure compliance with operational, legal and accounting requirements.
  • Back up to budget amendment processing.
  • Manages disbursement activity in the contract portal.
  • Supports the office with general administrative tasks such as ordering office supplies.
  • Serves as a critical cross-trained employee for the various functions within the Finance Department.
  • Maintain and enhance various reports and spreadsheets for statistical record keeping purposes.
  • Assists and provides information and responds to questions of various departments concerning claims, receipts, or contracts.
  • Refers to others in the department if unable to resolve or respond to the issues.
  • Performs special projects such as implementing new software programs and preparing financial statement information.
  • Assists with the input and management of vendor changes.
  • Assists with miscellaneous data entry and tracking related to payroll activities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates Degree in Accounting and one (1) year of bookkeeping, accounting, or finance experience.
  • High School Diploma and three (3) years of bookkeeping, accounting, or finance experience.
  • Experience using the Microsoft Office suite of products.
  • Valid Minnesota Drivers License or evidence of mobility.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One (1) year of experience in governmental accounting or a related area.
  • Working knowledge of PC or automated system applications.
  • Work experience in a finance department of a governmental entity or work experience in governmental accounting.
  • Experience in accounts receivable, accounts payable, posting to ERP/Accounting systems, creating/ preparing financial reports, contract management, creating and modifying data in spreadsheets, reconciling financial discrepancies, developing/ implementing and/or modifying accounting software programs/tables, budgeting-working with budget, budget maintenance, processing amendments, policy and procedure creation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.

Benefit Summary

  • The schedule for this position is 20 hours per week. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are mandatory workdays, and the 3rd day can be either Monday, Thursday, or Friday.
