About the role
The State of Connecticut, Department of Labor (DOL) is recruiting for an Accounting Careers Trainee with the target class of Revenue Examiner 1 within the Employer Status Unit. The Employer Status Unit is responsible for determining an employer’s liability for unemployment insurance coverage; registering employers for Connecticut State Unemployment Taxes; assisting employers in their efforts to comply with state unemployment insurance laws and regulations.
Responsibilities
- Respond to inquiries related to annual rate notices.
- Register employers for unemployment tax reporting.
- Determine status and liability of employers (e.g. new, successor, non-subject status).
- Status of employers (new employer, successor).
- Change of address, status.
- Discontinue/release of liability for registered employers.
- Changes in payment option (Tax or Benefit Reimbursing).
- Interpretation of Unemployment laws and regulations.
- Joint and Unit accounts of commonly controlled entities.
- Requests for partial transfers of Merit Rating experience.
- Clearance statements for corporations regarding status with Secretary of State.
- Identify potential employers subject to UI tax law.
- Notify employers of their liability and initial rates.
- Terminate inactive employer accounts.
- Process and record all coverage information.
- Handle liability appeals.
- Maintain accurate and current files on each employer.

Salary Note: Minimum Requirements Hiring Rate Completion of 1 Year of Training Bachelor's degree with at least 15 semester hours in accounting and/or qualifying experience Step 3: $61,264/year Step 5: $65,384/year Bachelor's degree with at least 30 semester hours in accounting Step 5: $65,384/year Step 7: $69,521/year Master's degree in a related field with at least 15 semester hours in accounting Step 5: $65,384/year Step 7: $69,521/year Master's degree in a related field with at least 30 semester hours in accounting Step 6: $67,460/year Step 7: $69,521/year The salary for an employee who completes any of the above minimum requirements after initial appointment to the Accounting Careers Trainee job class will be adjusted commensurate with the schedule above and effective the pay period following the date the degree has been conferred or the pay period following the date the appropriate number of credits as indicated above have been earned. For current state employees compensation will be in accordance with guidelines for computing salary adjustments set forth by the Department of Administrative Services, Determining Salary Upon Change in Class Manual.

Purpose of Job Class (Nature of Work): In a state agency this class is accountable for mastering the skills necessary to satisfactorily complete the training program for a professional accounting or auditing position. Examples of Duties: Receives training in introductory accounting or auditing work for development of skills and knowledge in order to qualify for advancement into a professional agency accounting or auditing position; Performs a variety of increasingly difficult duties as skills are acquired during the course of the training period; Examines financial records of governmental or private businesses and accounting methods and procedures to ensure compliance with statutes, regulations, guidelines or accepted accounting principles; May receive training in such areas as maintaining financial records and accounts, establishing financial statements and schedules, and preparing budget estimates; Knowledge, Skill and Ability: Knowledge of accounting and auditing principles and practices; business mathematics and statistics; business uses of information technology; effective report writing; Ability to read and understand written materials; utilize computer software.
