About the Role

Utilizes various advising and coaching techniques to provide confidential academic advising to a caseload of undergraduate Honors College students. Ensures students receive individualized attention to navigate their academic programs using a high-tech and high-touch approach to case management. Develops and monitors academic plans to support timely graduation and the University's retention and graduation initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Manages a caseload of advisees using advising techniques and technology.
  • Responds to student messages, inquiries, and requests within 2 business days.
  • Provides academic advising and guidance to prospective FIU students (on-campus and at off-campus events) and current students considering a change of major.
  • Educates advisees on accessing resources and technological tools (e.g., Career and Talent Development, Center for Academic Success, PDA, Major Maps, EAB, Handshake).
  • Informs advisees about relevant policies and procedures (e.g., Excess Credit Surcharge, NC grades, Academic Salvage/Amnesty).
  • Provides general career advising to help students plan for employment or future education and facilitates career-readiness through referrals to available resources.
  • Coordinates with program faculty, career professionals, and the Center for Student Engagement to develop engagement opportunities for students.
  • Conducts targeted outreach campaigns to improve retention and graduation rates.
  • Acts as a student advocate by identifying potential roadblocks to success and escalating them for resolution.
  • Oversees the academic standing process for the Honors College, including identifying, notifying, and monitoring students on warning, probation, or dismissal.
  • Coordinates interventions for students not in good academic standing (e.g., advising appointments and progress reports) and develops semesterly reports detailing student progress.
  • Adheres to all State of Florida, University, NCAA, Conference USA, and college/department regulations, rules, and policies.
  • Reports known NCAA violations or concerns to a direct supervisor or the Athletics Compliance Office.
  • May serve as an advisor for student-athletes, including processing mid-term and annual NCAA Progress Toward Degree forms.
  • Serves as a mentor for new advisors and supervises practicum students as needed.
  • Works with at-risk student populations and additional cohort projects.
  • Assists administrators with college-wide projects (e.g., transient approvals, post-90 credit changes to program/plan, excess credit petitions, PTD approvals).
  • Completes Academic Coaching Training and applies techniques with special populations.
  • Coordinates special projects for the team (e.g., distribution and completion of Excess Credit Surcharge lists, First-Year Orientations, and New Student Workshops).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of experience in academic advising or student services within higher education; OR a Master’s degree.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in collegiate academic advising and familiarity with the State of Florida University System.

Benefits

  • Advertised salary of $50,000.

Schedule

Begin time: 8:30 AM
End time: 5:00 PM

Ability to work flexible hours as needed.

Working Conditions

  • Required to spend 50% or more of time operating a computer.
