Hiring Department: The Division of Student Success at UMKC is seeking an Undergraduate Academic Advisor to join the Roo Advising Team, a centralized advising model offering proactive, personalized, and comprehensive advising. This role is specifically for the Human Behavior, Education & Justice Major Academic Path (MAP), which includes the following programs:

  • Communication Studies
  • Criminal Justice and Criminology
  • History
  • Liberal Arts
  • Philosophy
  • Political Sciences
  • Psychology
  • Sociology (Anthropology)

About the Role

The successful applicant will prioritize the advisor-student relationship, providing proactive guidance to help students make informed choices toward degree completion. The role emphasizes professional development and upholding UMKC’s Culture of Care and Statement of Values in all interactions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop advising relationships supporting students’ interests, values, skills, and career aspirations.
  • Manage a caseload of up to 350 students.
  • Utilize workflow procedures for form submission, transfer course equivalency, and transcript updates.
  • Assist students in navigating UMKC technology (Pathway, Canvas, UMKC Connect, PlanMyDegree).
  • Monitor and support students in completing milestones, success plans, enrollment, and academic progress.
  • Maintain accurate advising notes and respond to early alert notifications in collaboration with academic units and success coaches.
  • Understand academic standing, GPA adjustments, and academic recovery protocols to assist students facing challenges.
  • Attend MAP team meetings, monthly Roo Advising training, and other required advisor trainings.
  • Collaborate on team projects and provide caseload coverage during absences.
  • Contribute to the scholarship and service of advising within Roo Advising, UMKC, and broader communities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Schedule

The position requires availability for drop-in and scheduled advising appointments, including in-person and virtual sessions during normal business hours and up to 4 evening hours per month. Summer Orientation (June–July) may require occasional weekend work. The role is primarily in-person.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 1 year of relevant experience (e.g., student services, academic advising, student leadership, or assistantships).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree.
  • 1–3 years of experience in student services and/or academic advising.

Pay

The anticipated hiring range is $42,000–$47,000 annually, determined by education, skills, and experience. The University of Missouri offers generous leave, health plans, and retirement contributions.
