About the role
The Department of Biological Sciences in the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences seeks an Academic Advisor to support students in achieving their academic and professional goals. Advisors work with over 1600 students across six degree programs, providing guidance on course selection, planning for degree attainment, and preparing for professional schools.
Responsibilities
- Identify and support students' academic and career goals
- Select appropriate courses to help students meet their educational objectives
- Plan for degree attainment, including graduation requirements and potential career paths
- Manage small to medium-sized, moderately complex projects
- Collaborate with peers and faculty to provide comprehensive support to students
- Work with students from diverse backgrounds, including underrepresented minorities, first-generation, and international students
- Assist students in applying to professional health-related programs (medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physician assistant, physical therapy, etc.) or research-based graduate programs
- Provide guidance on career development and opportunities in research, education, and industry
Requirements
- A master's degree and 2 years of experience working with high school or undergraduate students in an advisory, teaching, supervisory, or mentoring role
- Subject-matter expertise and/or work experience in the life sciences or related fields
- A genuine commitment to student success
- Excellent organizational, communication, and timeliness skills
- Patience, flexibility, energy, and a sincere desire to assist students
- An ability to understand and appreciate the perspectives of students from all communities, especially communities of color and other underrepresented groups
Preferred qualifications
- A master's degree in biological sciences or an adjacent field, such as biomedical engineering, chemistry, data science with a life science focus, environmental science, clinical lab science, neuroscience, psychology, post-graduate allied health, or science education
- Experience in academic, clinical, or research settings relevant to the life sciences
