Position Summary

Academic advisors assist students in their development by constructing educational plans to achieve their academic goals and complete their course of study. They focus on academic progress, movement towards graduation, and, at times, career goals. Through their fluency with the curriculum, university and department requirements, the class requirements, and close collaboration with the faculty, they assist students to make informed decisions about their educational plan. Their knowledge of student-facing offices such as Student Finance, Registrar, Student Success, Learning Success Center, Shevet Glaubach Center for Career Strategy, and Counseling Center provides the student with the necessary tools to navigate potential difficulties on the path to success. This position serves students and therefore involves extensive interpersonal, communication, and social problem-solving skills. A sympathetic and generous disposition is a necessary hallmark of a successful and well-respected advisor as they provide individualized assistance and, at times, interpret students’ needs.

Position Responsibilities

  • Advise new, returning, transfer, and international students regarding appropriate class selection, academic policies and procedures, the requirements of their major, campus resources, and academic and/or departmental requirements
  • Assist students in identifying long-term goals, both academically and personally
  • Guide students to meet their goals through exploration of classes, majors, and academic programs while meeting graduation requirements in a timely fashion
  • Uses Starfish for scheduling, note-taking, creating and clearing flags, and for follow-up on referrals and alerts
  • All Starfish flags must be cleared in a timely and thorough manner to ensure the concern has been addressed to completion
  • Starfish should be checked every 2 to 3 days
  • Participate in inter-departmental Student Support Committee meetings to identify students in need of academic advising support
  • Provide interim follow-up for students in need of support
  • Check in on progress with students and instructors and follow up on referrals and alerts
  • Collaborate with other departments such as Student Success, Learning Success, Residence Life, and Counseling Center to ensure students are connected with the resources on campus that can support their learning and success
  • Understands academic policies and procedures to guide students in decision-making
  • Assists FTOCs in the transition to university life by collaborating on the first-year student success course, which consists of maximally six one-hour group meetings per semester
  • Follow up with the Enrolled Not Registered List in a timely fashion
  • Perform junior and senior checks
  • Assist students in the Leave of Absence or Withdrawal process
  • Open house and orientation duties as needed
  • Planning and participating in orientation and registration activities
  • Conducting student workshops and trainings
  • Other duties as assigned

Experience & Education Background

  • A Master's degree and five years’ experience working at a university, preferably in Academic Student Services, are required
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, along with an attention to detail and accuracy
  • Must be comfortable working with students, administrators, deans, and faculty, and discussing student issues in a confidential manner
  • He/she will demonstrate a proven ability to take independent initiative as well as work collaboratively with the advising team
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and database software, and some night and Sunday hours may be required

Skills & Competencies

  • The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills and experience working as an academic advisor to undergraduate students
  • The candidate must be comfortable working with students and interacting with faculty and senior administrators

Salary Range

$67,000 - $70,000
