911 Dispatcher - Lateral

Wage: $24.80/hour (shift differential may be added). Full-time position with benefits.

About the role

Performs a variety of working-level technical duties involving communications equipment to gather and record necessary information, and to dispatch police, fire, and emergency personnel in response to emergency and assistance calls for service.

Works under the general supervision of the Shift Supervisor.

Responsibilities

• Dispatches for multiple public safety agencies, including law enforcement, fire, and EMS, at the local, state, and federal levels.
• Operates a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system and other public safety communications computer software.
• Operates telephone, radio, and paging systems.
• Receives emergency and non-emergency calls and obtains essential information through structured, policy-based interrogation.
• Makes initial assessment of the nature and urgency of the call.
• Makes decisions regarding agency resources and appropriate response.
• Provides vital information to caller and responding units.
• Communicates with public safety personnel via phone, radio, and in person.
• Monitors the location and maintains accurate status of law enforcement, fire, and EMS units.
• Queries multiple databases to obtain relevant information.
• Enters data and performs transactions in local, state, and federal databases.
• Maintains current wrecker information and dispatches when requested.
• Maintains confidentiality with information obtained through employment with the District.
• Follows all District policies and operating procedures, and local, state, and federal regulations applicable to the job.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

• Meet all minimum qualifications of the Emergency Dispatcher Trainee position.
• Successful completion of the District's Emergency Dispatcher Trainee program.
• Hold current certifications for Peace Officer Standards and Training Dispatcher, Emergency Medical Dispatcher, UCJIS User, CPR, and other certifications the District deems necessary for the position.

Schedule

Full-time position with irregular work hours and schedules, including daytime and nighttime hours, weekends, and holidays. Adjustment of work hours, breaks, or time off, and working overtime may be required on short notice.

Work Environment

• Primarily indoors in a professional office environment.
• Outdoor operations may be required for special events or emergency situations.
• Frequent use of communications and computer equipment, including radio equipment, headsets, consoles, telephone systems (including 911-specific features), paging systems, logging recorders, TDD/TTY devices, fax machines, computers, printers, and industry-specific software.

Physical Demands

• Frequently required to sit or stand for extended periods, reach with arms, and use hands and fingers to handle equipment and controls.
• Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required: ability to see fine detail and adjust focus.
• Specific hearing and speech abilities required: ability to clearly hear phone and radio traffic of varying volume levels through a headset; ability to speak in a clear, concise, and timely manner.
