About the Role
Assist with supervision of all phases of the basketball program, including planning, strategy, and instruction in fundamentals. Responsible for care and issuance of all basketball equipment used by the team. Work in cooperation with the building Activity Director and the Director of Athletics for the Davenport Community Schools.
Responsibilities
- Communicate with high school coaching staff(s) and attend meetings or mini clinics at high school(s) to ensure continuity in the DCSD 7-12 grade boys' basketball program.
- Understand, monitor, and enforce district academic standards, policies, and eligibility requirements.
- Develop players to their fullest potential, starting with the basic fundamentals of basketball and progressing to advanced skills.
- Promote good sportsmanship among student-athletes.
- Complete required reports and records accurately and in a timely manner.
- Supervise players at all practices, games, in the locker room, and on the bus.
- Support and implement Davenport's multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) for behavior and academics.
- Implement Crisis Prevention Intervention strategies, including physical restraint procedures and escorting when necessary.
- Perform any additional duties as assigned by administration.
Requirements
- Must hold a valid Iowa Coaching Authorization or Iowa Teaching License with Coaching Endorsement.
- Experience with competition/success at the state level is desired.
- Strong interpersonal skills with a proven record of building rapport with culturally diverse students.
- Enthusiastic attitude and ability to understand intermediate-aged youth in an athletic setting.
- Good attendance and punctuality.
Physical Requirements
- Regularly required to sit, stand, speak, hear, see, and walk to carry out routine duties.
- Must be able to occasionally lift, move, or push items of 50 lbs, such as assisting children or moving/rearranging furniture.
- Must be able to supervise students in all types of weather, both indoors and outdoors.
- Ability to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
Work Environment
- Noise level ranges from quiet to loud.
- Work may be indoors and/or outdoors, including non-air-conditioned rooms.
- Substance-free and fast-paced atmosphere with constant contact with students, staff, or the public.
- Direct responsibility for the safety, well-being, and work output of students.
