About the role
This position assists general education teachers in supervising students with disabilities, preparing instructional materials, and reinforcing classroom lessons.
Responsibilities
- Aid educators in preparing instructional materials, classrooms, and instructional activities.
- Serve as a 504 Assistant, helping supervise and assist children in the classroom and other areas of the school.
- Provide one-on-one assistance for students who are being evaluated for Section 504 or IDEA services.
- Operate assistive technologies and support the instructional process.
- Develop and implement behavior improvement strategies and support students with learning disabilities.
- Support students with emotional/behavioral disorders and assist them in developing independence.
- Assist students with exercises and class activities, focusing on small groups and individuals as necessary.
- Supervise students during arrival and departure of buses, in the halls, on field trips, during testing, at lunch, computer lab, and on school grounds.
- Assist students with specialized needs, providing assistance with daily living routines, skills including personal hygiene, toileting, dressing, and self-feeding.
- Assist with physical health programs, including physical therapy and special/adaptive equipment.
- Maintain a well-organized and efficient classroom environment by preparing and organizing instructional activities and materials.
- Grade assignments, administer standardized tests, record and analyze test scores/grades, and run errands as needed.
- Help teachers establish and implement behavioral objectives as needed.
- Model appropriate social and play skills, observe students' behavior, and notify teachers and/or school nurses of behavioral changes.
- Coordinate and participate in special programs or projects as assigned.
- Respond to inquiries from parents and assist with preparing notes and placing phone calls to parents.
- Perform routine clerical tasks such as preparing reports, copying and filing documents, entering and generating data, and responding to parent concerns via email.
- Support on-going training, monitoring, and support to schools in the Shelby County Schools Districts and Charter Schools in Easy 504 (digital compliance system) utilization.
Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Business, or related field, plus four years of relevant experience. Alternatively, a Master’s Degree can substitute for two years of experience.
